"AIM Light" - BigBlueBall

I purpose some sort of “light answer” to AIM. As we all know it is full of spy ware, and additional features no one gives a damn about, that just make the program guilty, IE Games, Auto Email Check, AIM Phone, Video, AIM today, Talk, I’m sure there is some people out there that actually use this crap, but for one I, do not, and I assume most other people are in the same category. I come online to either just talk to my friends, and people I must, and at other times to go into chat rooms. I frankly don’t care about that other crap. So it would be nice if there were a simple program, that didn’t have all this additional crap no one uses.

Any Suggestions or Comments?

If you are on Windows, then I’d go with GAIM, or Trillian, if Linux, then GAIM.

They do support multiple clients, but why not? If you want to keep AIM, you can skim it quite a bit. https://bigblueball.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9157

Hmm perhaps you may want to mess around with recompiling the source code to gaim to exclude all those other proticols and set it a little bit how you want.

Other than that the best solution I have for you is to get AIM 5.2 (the last build before 5.5 came out) for it does not have nearly the spyware amount and its not buggy with direct connection.

with trillian you can just delete the dlls for the protocols you don’t use and it won’t even load them into memory at all, so it’ll just act like it’s only an aim program. The other protocol icons won’t even show up on the bottom.

of course there’s always the option of manually hacking out the parts of AIM you dont want… i’ve trimmed mine down considerably, cut out all the unnecessary bitmaps and menus, etc etc
one word: ResHacker – find it with google, learn how to use it at this tutorial site or at this forum

Using ResHacker sounds cool, I am familer with it all ready. But that sounds cool for a tempt fix, I’m determined to get a program bulit ground up

Actually that might not be a bad project to do… Get the features of 5.5 into 5.2 without the bugs! Skin it down without the spyware and other things and have a whole new product.

I mean what additional features does 5.5 offer over 5.2 that are useful? Okay the Multiple login is nice, and besides that …? oh yeah it tells you when people go and come back from idle.

well that’s all good and true, but “light” is just as good of a word to use, since he didnt necessarily originally say he was going to try for an all-new program… light just means not as “heavy” or packed as the original. so a “light answer” would be perfectly acceptable 😉

anyway… back to the discussion
