MemberI was reading this article on CNN and noticed that it states the number of users using the service ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, And MSN, which shows the popularity:
AIM – 44 Million Users
Yahoo! – 19 Million Users
MSN – 17 Million Users
ICQ – 4 Million UsersAOL for awhile and I believe right now is the largest ISP, and if you have AOL you have AIM. And people wanted the most populer, service so they used AIM, and it has gone on from there. Although, Most of the other messengers are good if not better than AIM, and I think the amount of users will even out.
The specs are mentioned throughout the page here, which talks about how instant messaging is advancing and becoming more populer:
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/internet/04/27/beyond.instant.messaging.ap/index.htmlJust wondering, is this why most of you use AIM? Because of the member count? This is why I use it.

Memberthis is definately why I use aim. everyone I know uses it. its kind of hard trying to go without it because you always come across someone who uses it. this is why the FCC stopped aol from further developing the client to let other IM networks catch up. they basically had a monopoly on the instant messaging world. im pretty glad the restrictions were lifted though. now we’re seeing more of the cool features that MSN and yahoo have.

MemberForbez, The FCC made them stop developing the client? Can you link me to an article?

MemberI believed forbez was referencing the Live Video ban by the FCC that was recently lifted to allow AOL to add live video into their messenger.

Memberyes, I would love to use yahoo all the time, but my friends are all on AIM — there are only 2 people that I know that use yahoo, and they also use AIM….so what’s the point of having anything else…

ParticipantUmm…How were those numbers figured?
I don’t know anyone on my Buddy List that doesn’t have at least 2 screen names, most have more than 5.

Memberi don’t think there is any question that AIM is the most popular server in america, no matter how the numbers were counted.

MemberThat’s a really good point — are they talking about individual screennames? It’s a LOT harder to go into yahoo and sign up for a whole new yahoo account than it is to just get a new sn — with a service like yahoo you get a BUNCH of stuff all bundled together, same with msn, whereas with AIM you have a name, period.

MemberActually, with AIM you also can convert it to a whole suite of stuff if you sign into netscape.net. I believe I got a netscape.net screen name this way.

MemberWell, I have to say that these numbers seem strange to me. I remember that two years ago Microsoft announced they had over 100 million MSN Messenger users. Of course, it depends a lot if you’re counting the number of people who have the software installed and who connect once every three month or the number of people who really use the software, several times a week.
Even if we’re considering active users, the numbers don’t look right. I’m monitoring the number of active users Messenger Plus! has through auto-updates calls and right now, I have about 5 millions of them. You won’t make me beleive than almost a third of every MSN MEssenger user on the planet is using my software (that would be way too good to be true :p). If anyone else has some sources to refer, I would be gladd to see them :).

MemberYeah, your program is like a must have for MSN Messenger. So I can see why that many people are using it 😀

KeymasterThe link to the article on CNN is broken, so it’s difficult to know where they came up with their numbers. If I had to guess, I would say that those figures are probably for the United States market only.
Internationally, MSN Messenger has a much larger user base than the 17 million quoted.
Remember also that CNN is owned by Times-Warner, which also owns AOL. Is it really a surprise that they would pick the survey results that report the most favorable numbers for AIM?

MemberThats a good point; a lot of people outside the US use an IM client other than AIM. And I would agree that the reason most people use AIM is because everyone else has it.
