MemberEver since I gave in to the constant nagging to download AIM 5.5, AIM in it’s entirety hasn’t worked. Everytime I try to log on, I get an error: “The AIM service can’t be reached.” I have uninstalled, installed again, tried different versions… everything you could think of, but it still doesn’t work and hasn’t for weeks now. Actually, at one point, I went to aol.com and clicked “aim users click here” … it actually worked for a day or so. And then it started acting up again. So any help would be greatly appreciated! I’d really love to use AIM again!

MemberWhat internet connection are you using? What is your OS? Are other applications such as your browser or mail client working? Do you have a firewall or router?

What’s an OS? Excuse my stupidity. Are other applications such as your browser or mail client working?

MemberWe are having same problems but on both pcs. We have optimum online and use a linksys router B to connect our two computers. However we can get on Optimum Online and surf the net regularly with our Internet Browswer. The problem is the same as poster. We can not always connect to AOL INSTANT MESSENGER. Sometimes we have to try over and over by clicking log on and we will get on. The funny thing is that IF we do get on, it shows the buddy list but AIM Today comes up as a blank screen. This happens on both of the PCs. Like I said it happens IF we can get connected. I tried to uninstall, reinstall to no avail. Off the subject a bit, if I am on optimum online through IE I can get onto any site but if I put in http://www.aol.com it will not bring up. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have a software firewall that is blocking *.aol.com, are you running a firewall?

MemberUnfortunately I am not sure how to find out about FIREWALLs. However would that effect AOL instant messenger too? The only thing I know I have on my PC is the NORTON ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM.

Memberi’m not sure is this will work for you, but sometimes i get the same error message when i try to sign on…when you open AIM (the sign on screen), click ‘setup’ (bottom left corner)…then click ‘connection’ on the right side of the window…click the ‘auto configure’ button…and then click ‘OK’..if a message comes up with a smiley face, this means that a connection was found, and click ‘OK’…then try to sign on again… let me know how this works for you….hope i helped 🙂

Participantive noticed a handful of people are having this problem with the latest aim release..is it possible its aim thats screwing up and not other programs blocking people from signing on?

MemberI really doubt that one AIM versions being installed could keep other AIM versions from being able to sign on. But just in case, make sure you remove your AIM folder (default is c:/program files/AIM or AIM95) and remove all AIM registry keys. And for Chikadees question, an OS is your operating system (Windows XP Pro, Windows XP Home, Windows 98, etc.)

Not if your reinstalling AIM. You will lose your profile and the screen names saved at the login box though.
