MemberI’m using a relative’s computer along with their AOL account and I can’t get AIM to work. I disabled the firewall and checked for viruses/spyware but it’s still not working. The only three things I can think of that could be the problem are 1) AOL has somehow blocked AIM, 2) The AIM service is down, or 3) The software wasn’t properly installed.
I don’t want to mess around with this computer too much as it isn’t mine. The relative said I could use it while they’re out of town. I’ve used AIM with AOL before so I don’t know why it wouldn’t work now.
I’m using AOL 9.0 optimized and AIM 5.2.3292 (I know there’s a newer version but since I didn’t install it and it’s not my computer, I really don’t have the right to upgrade it.)
Any ideas on what the problem might be?

MemberWhere is the hold up occurring? During login? Or will the program not even start up?

MemberOops, I guess I should’ve mentioned that.
The problem occurs during login. It says, “1. connecting” and then after about 20 seconds I get a message that says, “The AIM service can’t be reached.” It never goes to step 2. I tried logging on several hours ago and couldn’t and I still can’t. AOL seems to be working fine.

MemberHere’s a little update.
I decided to use my own ISP account on the relative’s computer and not use AOL and I still can’t connect to AIM. So I guess either the service is down or I need to reinstall AIM. Is anyone else having problems? I haven’t heard anything about AIM not working for people.

MemberSomething just occurred to me. Doesn’t AIM 5.2.3292 come with spyware? If I removed spyware from this computer, could that have caused AIM not to work? I know that can happen with other programs. I heard Weatherbug is bundled with it but I left that one alone. All the other spyware that I removed didn’t seem like it was associated with AIM because I did thorough research on each of them before I removed them.
This is starting to get annoying.:(November 28, 2004 at 8:22 pm #106090colin
MemberI’m pretty sure the spyware that comes with the download won’t prohibit AIM from running, or else AOL wouldn’t put it in there. However, it’s worth a try to remove it.

MemberYea, that should work. Thanks Dave, I was thinkin it might be because of that, but I forgot what port AIM used and I didn’t know there was aan auto-configure. Leave it to Dave….

MemberI went ahead and reinstalled the darn thing and it works now. I guess a file got currupted or something. I would’ve liked to have known what exactly the problem was though.
