I am using AIM 6.9, and now that AIM 7.0 is out, there is a button in my buddy list window with a green arrow and “AIM Update” written. In the past when a pop-up window would appear, I would click no and it would not show up again. How can I get rid of this button? Would downgrading a build have any effect?
Thanks

The only official way to get rid of it is by upgrading to this new version of AIM.
The new AIM 7.0 client has a lot of performance and UI improvements. The installer is half the size of AIM 6.9 and includes a new feature called AIM Lifestream where you can see how many people have you on their buddy list, post status updates and comment on your buddy’s updates as well as upload photos as a status. You can even link it with your Delicious, Digg, Facebook, Flicker, Twitter, and YouTube accounts. Which lets you update and respond to Twitter and Facebook updates from AIM.
Give it a try. AOL is listening. So if there is something you don’t like, just use the feedback button in the AOL help menu to send your comments.
Enjoy.

October 18, 2009 at 6:19 pm #175951hyunhoMemberI have the same problem. I already tried AIM 7 and I didn’t like it very much. I don’t need lifestream and I prefer the UI for the buddy list and IM windows of AIM 6.9 over AIM 7. AIM 6.9 looks good with the ads and bottom plugins removed. There has to be some file that can be deleted or altered so that the AIM Update bar can be removed. If the top buttons were able to be removed too like the bottom plugin buttons, it’d be perfect.

On AIM 7 you can collapse the Lifestream tab by un-checking the Menu -> View -> Lifeatream and Me tabs option.
Be aware that your status messages are pushed to Lifestream via either client unless you change the host settings (see: Lifestream : Login). Your friends using AIM 7 might comment/like your status message which you will miss if you run the older client or hide Lifestream.
I urge you to provide feedback to AOL via Menu -. Help -> Feedback. There are points of view at stake that cannot be defended without extensive user feedback; so please speak up.
Thanks,
Gus Verdun
October 23, 2009 at 1:32 am #175952hyunhoMemberMost of my friends don’t update their AIM because of all the unnecessary extras that are added every version, and my friends aren’t the type of people to comment on someone’s status message even if they did update. They just IM me, saying something. And like I said, I don’t like the UI of AIM 7. The buddy list is too fat and cannot be resized to be thinner, and is just not aesthetically pleasing to me.
Moreover, I REALLY don’t like the new IM window layout. I don’t need the larger buddy icons because none of my friends use buddy icons. We use AIM to talk to each other, not for all the unnecessary stuff like the game plugins and lifestream and what not.
It comes down to preference. I prefer AIM 6.9. My feedback would simply be to make it look like AIM 6.9. It’s cool that AIM 7 uses less resources but it’s not like AIM 6.9 is eating my computer. My computer can handle it. Thus, it’d be cool if I could remove the annoying AIM Update button and the top 4 square buttons. Then AIM 6.9 would be as good as an AIM version could be.

July 12, 2010 at 8:43 pm #175954ThatOneGuyMemberI know this threads kind of old but I was searching for an answer to this question and never found one, so I figured out how to get rid of the AIM Update box on my own. Maybe this will help out somebody else in the future.
Find your aim folder and locate this file, then open it with notepad (you may want to make a backup copy of the file first):
Quote:AIM6 / services / imApp / yourversion / content / bl / blType Ctrl-F (or go to ‘find’ in the edit menu) and search for this line:
Quote:aimUpdateBox.setAttribute(“path”, path, true);Change ‘true’ to ‘false’, so it looks like this:
Quote:aimUpdateBox.setAttribute(“path”, path, false);Save the file.
The Update box should be gone when you restart the program.
August 23, 2010 at 2:44 am #175953hyunhoMemberInteresting ThatOneGuy. I came across these forums again because I forgot how to mod AIM 6.9 when doing it for a friend and I saw your reply. Unforunately, what you said didn’t work since mine was already saved as false:
aimUpdateBox.setAttribute(“path”, path, false);
However, thank you for leading me to the bl file because two lines below there is a line that reads:
aimUpdateBox.collapsed = false;
If this is changed to true, then it removes the AIM Update bar that has plagued my buddy list for the past year.
