I contributed to a thread and expressing my disagreement over something which happened to be what a member of staff said.
The issue under discussion is totally unimportant in this context.
The member of staff comes back with a reply ending with…. “…..oesn’t mean you’re right with your ‘logic’. It is how it is. 🙂
I don’t like how this thread’s going so I’m going to close it.”
How arrogant to abuse your power to close down a discussion when you disagree with something on it. The quick closure with the comment “I don’t like the way this thread’s going” smacks of the kind of authoritarian suppression of opinions that dogged Eastern Europe for half a century. There was no abuse, no flaming and nothing personal, just honest relevant opinions from all. Presumably this was done to prevent others posting disagreement of your opinion too.
The thread in question:-

Will this thread will get the same treatment?
November 20, 2009 at 11:38 pm #176319imported_Ven0mMemberAnd it’s exactly this reason for why I did it. Spying on people who are invisible is a invasion of privacy and there’s no way you can justify it, sorry. Your opinion and objections are noted but I locked it to avoid the topic becoming a flame thread.
Oh, and this topic’s locked too. 😉
November 21, 2009 at 12:30 am #176314NessaParticipantThe reason I moved this to the Staff Room is because I think Ven0m by locking this thread you just showed the guy that you are trying to step over him and give him more reason to complain.
I honestly think that first thread you locked did not need to be locked as it was just a sharing of opinion and not a how to violate someone’s privacy.
In my opinion you are really being unreasonable and the guy’s title of this thread is perfect.
Anyone can disagree with me but it’s not like we get very heated discussions here at BBB so having a conversation about privacy should not have been locked like you did.
November 21, 2009 at 12:59 am #176326PolarBearNPRParticipantShut it down? Why do that? I agree with Vanessa – this is just a difference of opinion. Get off your high horse and let someone else have a say.
November 21, 2009 at 1:11 am #176315NessaParticipantI forgot to mention – I could have just unlocked your threads and publically posted this but no reason for people to think that staff can’t get along and think that I’m trying to over-ride you.
November 21, 2009 at 4:04 am #176320imported_Ven0mMemberHmmmmm.
So you rather let some egomaniac go on about how spying on people isn’t wrong? Neat.
P.S. Read the original discussion, it was getting pretty heated and that’s why I closed that thread before a flame war started. You know, moderating before something bad happens like a flame war? Let the guy complain, rather that than having mass arguments about privacy and that’s something none of us wants. Oh well, do whatever the hell you want I don’t honestly care.
November 21, 2009 at 4:25 am #176328PhilipModeratorI have to agree with Vanessa on this one. Expressing differences of opinion is fine in my book…we should only consider locking or closing a thread if and when some serious flaming begins. Even then I’d maybe ask Jeff or other staffers before I go ahead with it.
I’ve taken the liberty of reopening the poll to see what our other staffers think about this.
November 21, 2009 at 4:26 am #176311detn8rParticipantOOOOKKK.. first off Ven0m, if you didn’t care, you wouldn’t have bothered to reply, so I know you care. You obviously feel passionate about the subject enough to go this far, so don’t say that. It’s weak 🙂
Secondly, this whole invasion of privacy thing has been beat up so many times, I don’t even think it’s worth mentioning. But, at the end of the day — I don’t feel (as a moral) to publicize products that could potentially be “an invasion of privacy”. However, discussing one’s opinion about the matter is totally legit. We can’t tell people what and how to say things. As long as it’s tasteful, who are we to say otherwise?
None of us are lawyers, and unless you want a legal opinion in the United States or Canada, come talk to me about Pre Paid Legal (muhaha) don’t block out people from sharing their opinion please.
As for the subject at hand.. a flame war? Come on.. trolls on BBB? Hardly. As long as people can have a professional discussion about a subject.. hell, let them play. As a moderator, if it gets out of hand, THEN intervene.
November 21, 2009 at 4:26 am #176327PolarBearNPRParticipantWha? I did read the original discussion. And yeah – spying on people isn’t always wrong… but parenting aside… Heated discussions are good – I didn’t see anything that was inflammatory – of course things could get more heated, but then is when we could moderate. No need for pre-emptive strikes in this lil forum. Enough of us are active enough to nip any situation in the bud WHEN it is needed… not JUST IN CASE something’s gonna happen.
And honestly you do care! That’s why you’re on staff, and why you made the decision to close the thread… and those are good things! Just think you went overboard in this case (but that’s just my opinion). Flame away! 😛
November 21, 2009 at 4:29 am #176321imported_Ven0mMemberSpying on people is wrong, period.
Actually someone pointed out the topic to me and I posted. Otherwise, I don’t care. But hey, if you want retards like ralf to go on about stupid stuff about spying on people, let them.
November 21, 2009 at 4:57 am #176312MrEggsaladParticipantWhoa whoa take a step back Ven0m, don’t get off calling him a retard. He simply voiced an opinion.
Second, quit masturbating your ego and reminding yourself you have more power on ONE website than he does by closing a thread because you didn’t like what he said.
And if you think spying on people is wrong, then you should be completely against invisible mode, as that ENABLES users to secretly log on and spy on their friends to see who is online. Enabling yourself to see invisible people is simply making everything like the old days before we had invisible mode.
I also agree with the bunch that there wasn’t flaming, it was simply a heated discussion and nothing more. So don’t get pissed off because something doesn’t agree with you on the internet.
If you can’t handle it, I suggest you get off.
November 21, 2009 at 5:06 am #176322imported_Ven0mMemberI’m sorry, but your logic about invisible mode is just plain wrong – do you even know what it’s for? Seriously? It gives the people the choice to log in without people annoying them which is a very useful feature, especially against potential stalkers. Invisible checker programs go against what the intended feature is for by defeating it with an exploit (in Yahoo! Messenger’s case) but I don’t expect any of you to understand the technical side of how this stuff works. I’m against people spying on people, not people trying to surf invisibly. How would any of you like it if someone was spying on your every move and stalking you? Think about that. I thought one of the jobs as a moderator was to handle an argument before it blows out of proportion. That argument in that topic was growing too heated so I stepped in.
For the record, I care about a person’s privacy – not some idiots/trolls who’d rather go around bragging about spying on people trying to justify what they’re doing is right – and it’s not in my book, sorry. I also don’t care what any of you do, do whatever you want but don’t expect me to clean up the mess again. It’s all yours, but don’t say I didn’t warn you. 😉
November 21, 2009 at 5:08 am #176316NessaParticipantVen0m;244587 wrote:Oh well, do whatever the hell you want I don’t honestly care. You made me laugh with this.
My main issue with all this to be honest is not only that I felt the member was right in saying you were abusing your power – it was your attitude.
Ven0m;244365 wrote:Sorry, but privacy must be respected. Just because you lack the ability to respect a person’s privacy doesn’t mean you’re right with your ‘logic’. It is how it is. 🙂I don’t like how this thread’s going so I’m going to close it.
You did so many things wrong with this – insulting the member FIRST by quoting the word logic and secondly by putting YOU don’t like how the thread is going.
Also yes, you do care – You resigned from staff and still stuck around so you do care – so don’t come at me with that.
And again this is just about honestly abusing power and your attitude in this.
The ONLY heated discussion in that thread was from YOU – it was so not a problem waiting to happen.
November 21, 2009 at 5:12 am #176323imported_Ven0mMemberIf you don’t like my attitude, tough. I have zero respect/kindness for those trying to defeat a person’s personal privacy, sorry. Yeah, I resigned and yet I still have the staff position… I wonder why? Gee who dropped the ball there, huh?
You’re all useless in my book.
November 21, 2009 at 5:16 am #176313MrEggsaladParticipant/highfive Nessa
Indeed, why would you continue to use staff abilities after resigning?
