I have recently built a new system and just installed AIM. The problem is that AIM will randomly close for no reason, no error message or anything. I restart AIM and it opens as normal, until a few minutes later, it does the same thing.. Over and over again. No other program does this, and I’ve tried reinstalling it. Ran memtest to see if that was a problem, no dice.
I’m running XP Pro, using the latest version of AIM, haven’t tried downgrading it yet, I like being able to link screen names and go on all of them at once.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Matt

This probably isn’t the answer you’re looking for but they increased the maximum number of buddies you can have on a single screen name, so IMO it’s simpler to consolidate into one screen name than to keep several linked SN’s. (You can use this AIM plugin).
About the randomly closing AIM, the only experience I’ve had with something like this is due to viruses. Have you scanned with AVG Free?

I run AVG once a week, it hasn’t found anything.
Thank you for the information though 🙂

March 28, 2008 at 1:07 am #168279ComputerMD82MemberI found out something interesting, it only happens if i’m talking to one person in particular. She scanned her comp for viruses as well but it still happens.
Weird…
March 28, 2008 at 11:12 pm #168277VvWolverinevVParticipantI doubt that anything on her end would cause YOUR AIM to disappear. The problem is probably on your machine. Anything is possible though.
March 31, 2008 at 4:43 am #168280ComputerMD82MemberIt happens when i talk to 2 people now, they both use 5.9, I have 6.5… It’s weird, it will happen 5 mines in 5 minutes, then not at all for the next 20, then start up again.

June 26, 2008 at 1:22 am #168282ComputerMD82MemberFinally figured out what was casing the problem, it wasn’t software at all, it was bad memory on the video card. Odd that it would cause AIM problems but at least it’s fixed 🙂

Doesn’t have to be, I found out that was the problem when I upgraded, picked up a 8600GTS for around $90. Depends on what kind of card you’re looking for though 🙂
Let me know if your upgrade fixes it.

Upgrading to newer versions of AIM often fixes those errors, which some people exploit to intentionally crash a person’s AIM client, but you won’t necessarily know it crashed…AIM just silently disappears.
