When I am viewing my mail (through Gmail, btw), in the upper right hand corner of the message, it shows the time, and approximately how many minutes or hours ago the message was sent. The problem is, I’m not sure if it is correct.
For example, I’ll check my mail at 12:00 noon, and the message will say I’ve received it at 8:32 am, and in parentheses, it will say 1 1/2 hours ago, when really, it was about 3 1/2 hours.
If anyone understands this, or has Gmail, do you know if there is a way I can change the settings to fix the time a message was sent? I’m wondering if the time is right and the number of hours is wrong. It’s really bothering me.
April 11, 2005 at 4:23 pm #118833neo_ny_23MemberI am not sure why this happens, but I have noticed the same problem with my Gmail accounts few days ago. but well, it doesnt matter to me so, I never realy thought about it. I realized that the time writen in the main inbox is more accurate (infact the right time) instead of the time written inside the message.
April 11, 2005 at 6:03 pm #118836gossipingraeMemberIt’s not really a big deal. I mean, I’ve been fine with it, I was just wondering if it could be fixed or not.
April 11, 2005 at 10:33 pm #118831Jeff HesterKeymasterI went to my Gmail out of curiosity to see if the same would happen with mine and I too noticed this now. Except mine says for example I received the email at 12:37pm but it says in parenthesis (5 hours ago) and right now it is 6:30pm. It is off by an hour. Weird and apparently after looking at this, Gmail auto detects the time from your computer’s set time.
April 12, 2005 at 1:17 am #118837gossipingraeMemberThe thing is though, I have to change the time zone to an INCORRECT one in order for my clock to be right.
I thought I was on Eastern time. -6:00 or something like that. Who the flip knows?
April 12, 2005 at 1:43 am #118841princeGParticipantYeah Miami is right, it’s set according to your computer’s time, so if you click on options in an email you receive, you see the local time of the sender.
April 12, 2005 at 4:01 am #118839HotShotScottMemberthe time gmail shows is there server time, not the time of your computer.

April 13, 2005 at 5:51 am #118834neo_ny_23MemberYeah, thats the right time which GMail picks from the individual system. But if I go into the message, it says the wrong time inside the message. Some times it also says like how many minutes before I received the email, and last few days its stucked at 0 minutes.. No matter how earlier I have received the email, it just says, received 0 minutes earlier.
April 13, 2005 at 6:13 pm #118838gossipingraeMemberAll in all, I’m really satisfied with Gmail, even though I’ve only been using it for a few months, but this thing really bugs me about the time. I mean, it isn’t THAT big a deal, I just like to know when someone sends me something.
April 14, 2005 at 6:47 am #118842MrOatsMemberYou can know if someone has sent you something (an email) by downloading the Gmail notifier. You can get it here: http://www.google.com/downloads/
I use it, it works well for me. A sound and small pop up with some of the email text comes up from your toolbar, with who it was from, when it was sent, etc. when you get a new email.
***Note: Make sure you type in: [email protected] completely, or it will not work. (Do this when you are done downloading and you are prompt to enter you “google account information”.)April 14, 2005 at 11:41 am #118832neo_ny_23MemberI hv no problems with Google notifier except it gets annoying when I start getting spams in my inbox. Thats it.
