MemberTop 7 Anti-Spyware/Adware Software Scam
1) MyNetProtector: Instead of fixing spyware/adware, it added approx. 57 more spyware/adware into your computer.
2) NoAdware: Detected only some registry keys of spyware/adware; USELESS !!!
3) PAL Spyware Remover: Too many false alarm; detected critical system files as spyware/adware, RESULTS = You’re computer can’t boot after doing a fix.
4) SpyAssult: Too many false alarm as well as adding more spyware/adware into your computer and then alert you the spyware/adware that it added.
5) SpyBlocs 2: Same as #3
6) Spyware Stormer: False alarm; Identified critical Registry keys for Windows as spyware/adware
7) XoftSpy: Remove spyware/adware files but leave their Registry keys behind.
Hope this helps everyone =)

ParticipantYep there’s tons of spyware cleaner scams out there… I would suggest using only Ad Aware SE and Spybot S&D. I have never had a problem while using these together, they seem to find everything between the two of them. I have also heard good things about Webroot’s Spy Sweeper but that is not a free product like the other two above.
Maybe this topic should be moved into computer room? As it applies to everyone, not just Yahoo users.

I’ll keep an eye open for those programs.November 16, 2004 at 1:24 am #104848MartinBradley
MemberI’ll echo the others, great topic here. It informs those who may not be sure about what programs to use in order to detect and remove adware and spyware.
On another note, I’ll second what Amy said, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D are very effective when used together, as each program detects things that the other may not.

Memberi agree with u amy, webroot spysweeper may not be free, but it has a trial version.. and trust me, its like a mini firewall coz it gives u prompts regarding what thing which file is doing..and the best thing about it is that it can detect viruses or trojans which norton antivirus cant detect. I tried to scan some trojans with norton av (updated) and adware, and then finaly spysweeper, it was spysweeper which realy detected it. I am using it and I feel safer.

MemberHere’s a recent article which I found on PCWorld.com. I think it fits in with the topic, below is a quote, and you can read the full article here.
Quote:quote:You’ve almost certainly encountered the ads: A dialog box pops up on your system, bearing the message “Warning! Your computer may be infected with spyware” and suggesting that you scan your computer immediately. Click it, and you often reach a Web site providing a “free spyware scanner” that finds all sorts of malware on your PC–and then offers to sell you software that will clean it all up.Should you buy these products? Based on our tests, our opinion is no. Following complaints from several PC World readers, we tested seven heavily advertised spyware-removal tools– MyNetProtector, NoAdware, PAL Spyware Remover, SpyAssault, SpyBlocs, Spyware Stormer, and XoftSpy–and found that none were as effective as reputable free products such as Spybot Search & Destroy. A couple even installed new spyware.
