Hey, I am a HS social studies teacher and we are going to have Wi-Fi in the classroom next year. Is there anyway that anyone and think of to use IM constructively in the classroom?? We have been experimenting with e-pals. Is there anything else out there?? Thanks in advance!
:rolleyes:August 22, 2003 at 3:34 am #96063Jeff HesterKeymasterYou might take a look at how other schools are using the Internet to get some ideas.
Some are using instant messaging for study groups. It could also be used for teamwork games like an online scavenger hunt.
August 30, 2003 at 9:25 pm #96065OreoMemberThanks Jeff!!! I’ll take a look at the link. Right now we’re dealing with an interesting problem. The school has shut off port 5050 (Means no Yahoo! for me at work) But the kids….resourceful as they are….seem to be messing with NetStat or something along those lines. My biggest fear is that some of them know what they’re doing…but MOST of them don’t know what they’re doing. I just don’t want them to leave themselves open to hackers or other PC problems. I am thinking of suggesting that we find some sort of school IM….just so they don’t do anything drastic to IM. But I don’t have anything to suggest…does anyone know of anything???

Oh and I found a couple more articles. Some teachers view instant messaging as a learning tool (from the Detroit Free Press); and a more practical article written by a teacher: Instant Messaging Projects.

I’ll look into the firewall things….but I’m kind of pulling at my admin’s heartstrings about letting me use messenger (My fiance’s in Spain for a month or two and we are on different schedules…so Yahoo! is our cheapest means of communication). My main concern is the kids fooling around with their PC’s and trying to IM with that NetStat type thing…I’m not really sure if it IS NetStat…but it looks like their in DOS but they really aren’t. The majority of the kiddies can’t even put a printer onto their PC’s. So when they learn to play with things like that….but don’t know much else…I worry about their laptops.
