MemberI was just thinking about the things I did when I was a young and crazy university student. One of them was deciding to join women’s Rugby one year. And no, unlike the stereotypes…OUR team was all straight. (not that people are not entitled to have their own preferences….it’s just that women’s Rugby has that stereotype attached to it). Anyway…I was wondering if anyone else out there was interested in the sport and/or learning the rules. YES! There ARE rules to Rugby….(When there is a score…it’s called a “try” even though you actually HAVE to touch the ball to the ground…unlike the “American Football ‘Touch Down'” where some one can just run across the the line.) Anyway, are there any ruggers, or current/ future Rugby fans out there?

MemberI haven’t played but it looks fun. I plan on messing around and making an attempt to play it once I get a bit older. Is it painful?

MemberI used to play but had to quit due to injury. It’s a great game. Similar to American Footy minus the armour and you can only tackle the guy with the ball. That would be the simplest explination. It’s a pretty popular game in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia.

MemberIn some ways it is closer to Soccer (football) yet you pick up the ball….but really it is a game all it’s own. There are NO forward passes allowed. You may backwards pass or pass to your side. There are positions called “Prop,” “hooker,” “second row” and the like… I’ll see if I can find a good site to explain the game. It is pretty easy to get hurt if you do not pay attention…and not QUITE as easy to get hurt if you DO pay attention! But it is LOTS of fun and the after parties cannot be beat! Truly they are the most fun!! (Though…if you go to a guys rugby party and you are a girl and do not know Rugby traditions…be on your guard!) Anyway….I’m off to find a good link. 😀
Edit: Here are some links:
Rugby UnionThese should help explain some of the rules of the game….as far as the parties…where there is much singing…but the lyrics really cannot be posted here. 😉

Does the women’s league have different rules at all or are they the same? One of my team mates broke another guys arm through a fair, hard tackle. The worst I ever saw though was my mate was evading, or looking for a pass or somthing and he was running side on for only a few seconds but he got tackled in those few seconds and one knee knocked into the other and dislocated it. I hurt my self lots of times too. Thats why I evantually quit so now I surf to keep fit. It’s a hell of a lot safer.January 11, 2005 at 5:27 am #111385Tigerblade
Participantyeah, i think i’ll stick to my fairly no-contact sports (volleyball, soccer, tennis) for the time being. having my leg snapped in two doesnt really sound like its on my agenda of things to do.
although its gotta be fun to watch.

We have Rugby here in Ireland as well…it is quite popular.
