I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Meetup.com? No, it’s not an online dating service… it’s a central, web-based clearinghouse for organizing and scheduling local special-interest groups.
They have “meet-ups” scheduled on a wide range of topics; music, games, books, languages and yes, even websites. There have been regular meet-ups of Slashdot members, kuro5hin fans and LockerGnomies.
Former Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean used Meetup to organize gatherings of supports and build an enormous groundswell of grassroots support, which he blew apart with his infamous meltdown.
I’ve never checked out any of these meetings in person. I saw that there was one for ICQ users coming up on April 17th, but so far only one person has signed up. Like throwing a global party, and no one showing up.
But it did make me think. Would there be any interest in meeting up with fellow BigBlueBall-ers?
Note to self: need to think of a better description of my fellow members.
I’d be interested if it was feasable enough. Mostly it’s where cash comes in. Unfortunately cash is inversely proportional to distance, cos Bora Bora would be nice. 🙂
