ParticipantI’m sure like everyone else, I’ve gotten about 10 or more of these “W32.Netsky.Z@mm” virus emails everyday. In the past two weeks, I have received two bounce backs, apparently saying that their email provider has caught a virus being sent from my yahoo.ca email account. Now I know for a fact that I’m not stupid enough to open one, but I don’t understand how it got MY email address. I’ve been told it scans through google.com, and uses random emails that it can find, or from mailing lists?
This seriously bugs me. I’ve done several up to date virus checks, but I come up clean. Am I just being paranoid about it, or what!?Quote:quote:

MemberDoubt if you got infected yourself.
I also got one of those e-mails from someone’s provider saying they recieved an e-mail from me with a virus or something like that stating my yahoo account but I know for a fact I dont even open those e-mails, norton catch them straight away. I dont even recognize all those people I have supposedly sent e-mails to. it might be that one of our friends is infected and it scans through thier address book or might be collecting from sites or mailing lists of some sorts, who knows.
Lately I’m getting them in pairs. I know that if norton catch one infected e-mail, it means that another is on the way.

MemberI also got some messages saying I had gave virus’s to people. I think they are fake, and are trying to get you to open the message.
I have also been getting them in pairs of 2.

MemberYup, I’m getting it in emails but my email filter blocks it and just sends me a warning. Must admit, shnemail.com is great. This is where I receive most of my emails, and it just blocks all the virus for me. 🙂

ParticipantHow would they be fake? Some of the emails I am getting are from admins at these email hosts. They’re obvisiously picking it up from some where. it just seems another reason to fully switch to gmail.

MemberDetn8r, what happens is that someone who has your email address in their address book gets the virus, and then it sends itself to other people, using names from the victims address book to fill in the “From” field.
The emails you’re getting from admins are not “fake” but they are likely auto-generated by their virus detection software, which is simply spitting back a reply to whomever is in the “From” field of the email address (in this case, YOU).
I get several of these a week. My webhost has virus scanning and I have Norton AV configured to automatically scan and block viruses before they ever reach my inbox. I know my system is clean, and I’ll bet yours is, too.
I wouldn’t lose any sleep over the messages. Just delete them.
