Since they opened up their platform to third-party developers, Facebook has become a great platform for creating viral applications that in turn can drive traffic back to the originator’s site.
I think there are opportunities for us to create something from and for BigBlueBall that could introduce a lot of Facebook users to our BBB world.
I’m looking for project team members interested in developing something fun and cool for BBB. We need coders (preferably familiar with Facebook’s API), designers and plain ol’ ideas, too!
Interested?

I’m already busy declining requests to be a vampire/werewolf/mermaid, to join fight club, to add an aquarium to my profile, to allow people to draw grafitti, and to send gifts.
The worst thing Facebook ever did (along with opening up the site to everyone in the world) was allowing 3rd party apps. Awful. It’s no better than MySpace now… maybe worse.
I got myself a GreaseMonkey extension to block all the extra stuff on people’s pages. Worth every penny. (free, by the way)

I just counted and I have FORTY different requests pending (not counting friend requests). Ugh.
But I have also added a few select applications (I don’t send invites, but I’ll use them myself). So there can be a sane application.

Perhaps some sort of integrated online presence tool?

Once you’ve gone and installed the Greasemonkey extension, go to the app’s site (linked above), click the “install this script” button and voila.
Log in to Facebook, and on any application you see cluttering up your friends’ profiles, there should be a small extra ‘x’ in the blue title bar. Clicking that ‘x’ will hide the application from your view until you choose to expand it later.

February 20, 2008 at 1:43 pm #167316Doris KenneyParticipantHow bout an app to search the BBB forums? User types the question, then gets redirected to the BBB site for the results?
Or, an app showing the most recent BBB forum post titles…..might generate some interest if they could see the “headlines” and again – a click takes them to BBB.

I initially thought that Jeff’s idea to create an app was a bit pointless, but now that I think about it, you could make up something very nice.
It would either have to be directly related to instant messaging or the BBB site itself.

That’s a possibility. It’s practical and useful. I have a similar gadget for my Vista desktop (see image).
Maybe we could create something like that — a purely practical tool, but cool looking. And in addition, we could create a “fun” app.
In the “old” days we had a fun little utility for AIM that let you find and insert one of over 2,000 different smileys in your chats. That alone was a big draw for BigBlueBall.
February 27, 2008 at 4:37 am #167318obiddleMemberis there something specific your site has to offer that users don’t have or can’t add to facebook? If not, come up with something for bigblueblog, maybe they can take a discussion to their facebook profile? Give that I try. I’d love to help.
let me know
February 27, 2008 at 6:21 pm #167313ixfd64MemberSince Facebook does not allow non-friends outside your network to see your profile, a nice application would be one that allows you to enter your contact details into the application’s database. Users who want to c=ontact you without adding you would simply search for your name within the database.
Facebook’s application policies do not allow applications to collect information that users have opted not to display (via privacy settings), but for an application like this, users would be consenting to give out their contact details.
March 7, 2008 at 11:40 pm #167317Doris KenneyParticipantRecognizing that not all Facebook users want a practical application, but sometimes just want the fun looking ones…
There’s been a huge surge in the “What _____ are you?” quizzes that then leave you with a nifty litttle app showing your result. “What instant messenger are you?” would be a cute one. All you need is a little 10 question quiz and some way of deciding what answers give you what. With a stylish BBB logo/link at the bottom or possibly our latest threads or blog entries, it might have possibilites.
And pulling from the thread I was just reading…how bout “Are you addicted to Instant Messaging?” Again a 10 question quiz…multiple choice…one of which would have to be:
“How many times do you post in the BBB forums each week?”
A) 21+
B) 6-20
C) 1-4
D) 0Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out where I’d fall on that one LOL! Again, a link to BBB and latest forum threads would be nice in the results box.
While they serve no practical purpose, Some people will drop virtually any app on their page…well any app that really isn’t useful that is. Any they invite friends to join them just because they can…it snowballs and before you know it you’re all over the place.

Making a BBB Facebook application. I’m just bias and only use the Facebook developed applications.
