I reinstalled AIM 5.5 so i could use the expressions and stuff and i got the ads off there but i cant figure out how to bypass the update message i want it disabled if all possible anyone got any ideas???
January 20, 2005 at 12:57 am #112376Someguy03MemberIt should leave you alone after you click cancel. Why can’t you just update to the latest version and then remove the ad’s? (Unless I am missing something here)
January 20, 2005 at 6:42 am #112379Nick162005MemberWell see the whole point is using AIM 5.5 so i can use the Expressions with 5.9 they cost money and i see no difference in it anywayz… I ran an ad Blocker called AIM ad hack and it didnt remove the update message i wanna bypass it so it dont come up anymore i dont want 5.9 i want to remain using 5.5..
January 20, 2005 at 6:15 pm #112378mm_jennaMemberThis can be done through modding. I’m not sure personally how to do it, but I know it’s been discussed a few times on the middle_man forums.

To do this:
1. Browse to C:Program FilesAIM
2. Find AIMRES.DLL and right click it.
3. Hit Copy
4. Right click anywhere and hit paste
5. You should now have a file called “Copy_Of_AIMRES.dll” or something of that nature.
6. Should anything go wrong in the process of editing your AIMRES.dll file, you may delete that file you edited and restore this copy by renaming it back to “aimres.dll”you need to get a free utility called reshack… you can download that at
http://delphi.icm.edu.pl/ftp/tools/ResHack.zipWhen you download and extract the zip file, run the reshack.exe and go to file—> open.
Browse to your aim directory and find aimres.dll
When you get that open,
Go to the dialog folder and look for the 264 folder inside the dialog folder. (Dialog 264)
Right Click 1033 and hit delete (in Dialog 264)
Save AIMres.dll in your aim folder and replace the existing aimres.dll (in order for it to allow you to save, you must totally be exited from AIM everytime you save, right click the aim dude by the clock and exit AIM.)
That should remove it.
This is solely your choice to be editing your aim files, so if something goes wrong, I am not one to blame. Just a little warning. But rest assure, the worst case could happen is that AIM just couldnt open. That’s why I had you make a back up of the aimres.dll file in case something went wrong 🙂
Good luck, man

Have you actually tried this? I don’t think removing the dialog will actually stop it from trying to update. If anything, it won’t open at all – or will error when it calls the code to display the dialog.

January 26, 2005 at 1:45 pm #112380CantTouchThisMemberI’m running 5.2.3292 which is lower than yours, I only got the update message once. After i hit “no thanks i won’t upgrade to your newest pile of sh!t”, i never got the message again.
January 26, 2005 at 2:53 pm #112377Ithaca1937MemberI’m running 5.5.3595 and I don’t remember being ask more then once. But Windows Media Player, MSN and MSN messenger keep asking.
January 26, 2005 at 6:40 pm #112384ILikeCherryCokeMemberYeah, I never got it again when I clicked No the first time. It basically told me they were putting a menu item on the menu called “Upgrade” or something….. but since this guy’s didnt do that, I figured i’d tell him what I did on my friend’s computer… it works… haha… it’s difficult but yeah, it works.
January 27, 2005 at 11:59 am #112381CantTouchThisMemberYeah, i got an “Upgrade menu” on my MYAim section, but i used ResHack to get rid of it.
