MemberCalling out to the Big Blue World—
Right now, I have an AOL account, but I almost never use it. I have downloaded AIM, and I just sign on with that. Is there a way to cancel your AOL account but continue to keep your AIM screen name? (I heard something about after you cancel an AOL account, they hold the screen name for 6 months) is that true?

MemberAre the AOL and AIM screennames different? Otherwise no. I have heard of no six month cancelling or anything like that. If you cancel your AOL account and use the same screenname for AIM you wouldn’t be able to use that screenname for AOL or AIM anymore because you deleted it.

hope that helps…November 27, 2004 at 2:30 am #106013RabidKitten
ParticipantMy mother got AOhell *cough* AOL 7 years ago and I’ve always used the same SN for AIM, it was never a problem with me, seemless transition and 5 years ago she cancled AOL (after I moved out) and it never gave me any problems. You don’t have the mail account or anything anymore, obviously if you get rid of AOL, but the SN should stay in tact…at least it did for me. *shrug* What do I know though, heh.
Although, once an AOL account is deleted, they do hold the SN for a period of time before it is reopened to the public, I’m not sure if it’s 6 months or 6 days to be honest, but if it’s still in use on AIM, it shouldn’t be a problem.November 27, 2004 at 2:45 pm #106012NickSing3
MemberOk thank you, both your stories contradict, but I think that RabidKitten has more experience. Should I ask AOL, or do I not want to go to that level?

MemberYou might want to break off all your ties with that piece of crap called AOL…well anyway I’ve never used AOL so I guess RK would be more knowledgeable in that field. My dad had AOL a long time ago and…it broke his computer…what do you expect? *goes to shoot AOL* well anyway…unless you really, really, really want that s/nyour talking about and want to make sure that you keep it…go ahead and ask AOL. It’s not a major pain to make another one…but then again I have over 15…heh.

Maybe they hold it for 90 days? If you get what I’m saying…that’s how long they hold “unused screennames” or soemthing like that…November 27, 2004 at 9:10 pm #106011Someguy03
MemberTaken from a previous topic on this issue:
Quote:quote:From the AIM site: http://www.aim.com/errors/SUSPENDED_n.adp?ccode=us&lang=en“Screen Names that were previously used on AOL but have been cancelled or suspended, can no longer be used on AIM. This includes both master accounts and sub-accounts. In order to continue using this Screen Name on AIM, please reactivate the account on AOL.”
