Yes, the FCC says “yes” to video for AOL Instant Messenger, and “no” to requirements for AOL to work with MSN and Yahoo to provide interoperability. Well, they really didn’t say AOL couldn’t provide interoperability or work on it, but by removing the restriction placed on AOL as part or their mega-merger with Time Warner Communications, they effectively killed any motivation for them to cooperated on interoperability efforts.
So anyone want to place a bet on how long it’ll take AOL to add live video to their IM?
And does this ruling drive the final nail in the coffin of ‘IM interoperability’ efforts?
I think it will take along time, you know how many more verisons of AIM are going to be out with video and have different bugs, another summer like this with 5 verisons in a month.
AOL has probably already been working on AIM with video so i wouldnt be surprised if they released a beta version by the end of September. but the FCC shouldnt have allowed AOL to do it because this was the only reason AOL would work on the IM Interoperability. they wont do it now because MSN is way better than theirs and the only reason people download AIM is because every1 has it. if they were to make it so u could im AIM users with MSN, MSN Messenger would be way more popular. especially knowing Windows Messenger came on Windows XP
It shouldn’t take aol long to implement video at all…the apple AIM product, ichat av for mac osX already has video enabled, and has promised interoperability with aim once they get video. So all the building blocks are there…shouldn’t take long to implement.
