OK so now its out……… the ‘partner’ of AOL is IBM yawn……… think i’ll go back to sleep. so what has changed? or didn’t you guys know AOL has been in bed with IBM for ages.
August 18, 2001 at 5:58 pm #69513rustedtightMemberInteresting tho it may be. AOL’s self prostitution with IBM hardly makes a dent in IM or IM interoperability, seems it may keep the authorities in the dark but hell, when was that difficult?
AOL is 90% of non business IM and they ‘proclaim’ Their ‘partnership’ with IBM? gimme a break, how many of you dudes have a chat account at IBM?
Exactly.
Thats what I thought.
A real effort on AOL’s part to meet interoperable IM part way? gimme a break.August 18, 2001 at 6:11 pm #69512rustedtightMemberAOL have merely popularised an unknown (in general) previously existing partnership. Big deal. So it’s to be IBM for sake of satisfying the people in charge.
Lets not forget IBM’s previous partner in this sphere of their world was Excite. Hell it did them a lot of good huh. Yawn….. gotta sleep now.August 20, 2001 at 3:04 am #69510Jeff HesterKeymasterI yawned when I first read that announcement, too.
But then when I thought about it, it makes some sense. First of all, there actually ARE people who use Lotus Sametime (Lotus is owned by IBM). In fact, I’m one of several thousand at a major corporation who use it internally. Sametime’s market is the business community, and AIM’s market is the home user. So they complement, rather than compete.
Also, Sametime’s market is small compared to an MSN or Yahoo, so it makes a “safer” test bed.
So once they get past this test (which SHOULD be a slam dunk!), the really interesting thing will be who AOL partners with next. Any bets???

I would much rather bet on when it will happen rather than with whom. My money is on it not being announced within the next 160 days.
OK, my guess on the next partner? Sun Microsystems.Any side bets?

August 22, 2001 at 7:00 pm #69509Jeff HesterKeymasterSun Microsystems? That WOULD be a yawner!
Although a logical next step would be to test cross platform interoperability (like with Linux, Unix or Macs). And I have to agree with you; I don’t think we’ll see any new announcements for three months at least!Jeff Hester
