Everyone who’s used instant messaging for more than a few times understands that AOL’s Instant Messenger is a BIG player. They’ve got the big user base, but even with their ads in the buddy list and the annoying “AIM Today”, they haven’t managed to make it profitable.
Well, they may have finally found a way in mobile phone messaging. Check it out in this excerpted article from USA Today.
On a personal note, I just got a new cell phone service and the new Nokia phone I got supports (you guessed it) AIM. Setting it up was a major pain-in-the-keister, and sending messages is no better. Fortunately there’s a printable cheat-sheet with instructions, which in this case you really do need to read in order to see how to send a damn message. The good thing is that if you login to AIM through your cell phone, your friends will see you as “online” but with a little cell phone icon next to your name (assuming they’re running the latest version of AIM).
If you have a cell phone, do you use text messaging or IM on it? Or are those features pretty and sweet but empty of real nutritional value? ![]()

i was on my cell phone and i couldnt figure out how to sign off of aim on it. So then i turned the phone off and back on again. (BIG mistake!!) I not only wasted many minutes, but i also got my phone takin away. Its just a friendly little tip for all those using cell phones to chat.
Cell phones and IM have a long way to go before they’re truly useable. It’s pretty complex right now, but it will get there.
