Using AOL IM at work has been looked down on at my office although not entirely restricted.
A long time ago, I thought I saw a java version or add-on that allowed IM to work from within an internet browser or Outlook.
Basically, I’m looking to continue to use my chat features in another program that doesn’t look as much as a chat problem.. at least on a quick glance.
Any suggestions??

BrianYou may want to try Meebo, see if that works for you. It’s the same as the regular AIM client, but contained within a webpage. So… it kind of does what you want, sorta. While it looks the same, you can easily switch to a different window without an IM tab flashing in your taskbar.
However… I have to caution you that your employer probably has good reasons to restrict access to instant message programs, and you risk the consequences if you are “caught” using IM at work.

At my office we use Lotus Sametime for internal instant messaging. Some versions of Sametime actually allow you to sign into AIM and use Sametime as an AIM client.
There are also programs like Trillian which is skinable. There are some very professional (serious?) looking skins available that will give you IMs more of a business appearance.
As Tigerblade noted, if your company doesn’t want you to use AIM, you probably shouldn’t. Regardless of how it looks on your screen, your company could be monitoring your IMs on the network and track your activity anyway.
don’t forget that AIM servers listen on almost all ports (including port 80). unlesss your IT staff has put up very complex packet filters (or block access to *.aim.com and *.aol.com) you should be able to log into AIM. you should have AIM installed already. once you open it click “Setup” >> “Connection” >> change the port number to “80” (no quotes).
if they do not allow installing programs you can use Miranda IM: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/miranda/miranda-im-0401.zip?download from a Floppy Disk or USB Mass Storage Device (camera, thumb drive, ipod, etc).
