February 20, 2004 at 1:16 am #49509panickedthumbMemberCongrats 🙂 but my question is, how are you doing file transfer? As it says in your profile, your client is gaim, and it doesn’t exactly like file transfers does it?
I’ve said before, I ADORE gaim, but I have to keep aim for the file transfer.

February 20, 2004 at 1:23 am #49508panickedthumbMemberonly problem with that is big files that the email server will block. I have no problem with using email at all, but a lot of people I talk to are idiots unfortunately and don’t know how to send a friggin file over the net *L*
If they have file transfer fixed anytime soon, I’ll be a convert, and everyone will hear about it and hopefully be converted as well.
February 20, 2004 at 1:51 am #49495CharlesMemberJust use FTP to file transfer. It can be set up in XP Pro and Windows 2k. It really is a lot easier and more reliable than Direct Connecting in AIM.
February 20, 2004 at 1:55 am #49507panickedthumbMemberHowever…
Does Gaim support file transfer?
Somewhat, yeah. Yahoo! supports sending and receiving files in Gaim 0.75 and higher. Although, as of 0.75 you can only send files less than 1MB. AIM (using OSCAR) supports receiving files pretty well. Sending files over AIM occasionally works, but it’s slightly buggy. Jabber supports receiving files.
Most of the protocols themselves support file transfer, but Gaim has not been written to support it yet. If you would like file transfer to work better or be more complete, get CVS and submit a patch using the generic file transfer API.
so maybe there’s hope, they seem to be close.
February 20, 2004 at 1:57 am #49506panickedthumbMembershizna, not many people will know how to set up ftp like that.

FTP on WindowsXP/2000 is also insecure if you don’t know what your doing.

February 20, 2004 at 10:40 am #49505panickedthumbMemberYeah… I thought one of the deals with AOL’s merger with TW is that they had to open up the protocol specification… hmm… maybe they just mean they had to open TOC? I dunno. I think AOL is pure evil. Well maybe not evil but not very nice either. THey were the downfall of ICQ, I THOUGHT that with Winamp3 they were going to be Winamp’s downfall… lets hope that Time Warner doesn’t start making bad movies now because of it *L*
February 20, 2004 at 4:56 pm #49503Beetle1283MemberAfter reading all this I am tempted to switch to Gaim…. I think I have a solution for file transfers… I have a program called WWW File Share Pro… it is very small and easy to use… You specify a folder or file on ur computer u want to share or whatever… and it gives u a website to give to ur buddy… he goes to that website and downloads the file…. and he can upload the same way.

How so?
I’m not talking about stupid security mistakes like setting the root directory to your C drive. I’m talking about serious Microsoft IIS security vulnerabilities.
February 25, 2004 at 4:16 pm #49498chokeonyourwordsMemberheh heh i don’t use gaim or that dumb new version of aim either, i just use one of the older versions of dead aim with aim 5.2… i like to keep it simple, i tried 5.5 and i don’t think i ever will again, unless i have some reason to feel compelled to. i mean, the games are great and all, but.. yeah, LoL
February 25, 2004 at 6:42 pm #49511defnshowMemberI use gaim and aol 5.2 with deadaim here… I use gaim tho in a console window on a pentium 166 laptop that is so old it runs kde and gnome too slowly lol. I use it with my wireless card when I am not in my apartment and when I need a file I use ftp lol. You gotta realize how slick it looks when you type notes in class and talk on instant messanger all on a console screen… people don’t know what the hell im doing
February 26, 2004 at 10:49 pm #49502Sexybrunette8388MemberSo how does this whole thing work exactly?? There is some many cracked up versions of dead aim…I mean I really don’t underrstand why ppl need it soo bad?? But whatever…all i wanna know is what this whole gaim is all about if someone could fill me in that would be great! Thanxs;)
