The Associated Press has released an online tool for viewing satellite images of the situation in New Orleans. Users can zoom in on specific neighborhoods and streets, and view the destruction caused by hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flooding throughout the city.
The high-definition satellite imagery was taken on Wednesday by DigitalGlobe; resolution is at 2.4 meters per pixel. Viewers can see what areas are still submerged in water and potentially whether their house still exists. The AP says it will be updating the tool as new images become available.
Very cool, although Google Earth is a far better tool for satellite imagery viewing, and they are offering up plenty of Hurrican Katrina overlays for seeing the before and after effect.
Notice Google makes you download their software before you can actually view any of the images, they don’t just come in picture format. 😉
Actually even Google Maps (which doesn’t require a download) shows Katrina overlays as well.
Wow, Jeff, thanks for that link, that’s unbelieveable, I mean, like, just stop and say wow.
Here’s an image of the worst part of New Orelans. You can see the water rushing in, and the houses on the right all skewn, while the ones on the left are still in rows. That’s an unbelieveable picture, I’m speechless.
