Earthstation 5 http://www.earthstation5.com http://forums2.es5.com
contains malicious code intentionally placed there by the developers, this is not a bug it has been intentionally added.
There are other vunerabilities within ES5 but this is the more serious as an exploit binary has already been released puting users increasingly at risk.To uninstall ES5:
*. Stop ES5.exe processes via Task manager.
*. use ES5’s own uninstaller.
*. delete registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/HelmuthSpeakingForBoskone
*. remove the ES5 entry from HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run
*. delete registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/earthstation5
*. remove the ES5 entry from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run
*. delete all files in the ES5 folder after moving your downloaded files to a safe place.
*. reboot. Why this code was included will be debated for several months to come, claims and counter claims will be made, the fact that it is there and an exploit has already been released is sufficient reason to remove this P2P application from your computer.
Actually I liked it and enjoyed using it… damn.I already have the exploit and will look at it later, my feelings are however to delete the software from my systems.
October 7, 2003 at 1:46 pm #89630rustedtightMemberI have checked out the exploit and yes it does offer unrestricted access to your computer files, should you log on as administrator then all a hacker need do is delete the ‘boot.ini’ file to ensure your computer does not boot up, and effectively is destroyed.
Should the RIAA use this exploit then they have a list of ALL files shared on your computer.
Your call… dont say you were not warned.October 7, 2003 at 3:35 pm #89632IndyToneMemberDUNNN DUNNN DUNNNNNNN!!!!
October 10, 2003 at 1:39 pm #89629rustedtightMemberEarthstation 5 has released a new edition of its file-swapping software, responding to reports that running older versions could allow hackers to delete critical files on a user’s computer.
In an e-mail statement sent to CNET News.com on Monday and attributed to Earthstation 5 chief programmer “Filehoover,” the company acknowledged that the security problem did exist. However, it added that the glitch had been part of an automatic remote update
feature that had been removed in the new version of the program, which was available.Maybe I believe them, maybe I believe ‘Filehoover’ is an exec of the company, maybe, I will make my own decision about this, as should each of you.
Because of the seriousness of the original report of a code problem in the software the link to the download site has been removed from this site. Should you want to download the software I guess you know how to find it.
Like CNET says… “Earthstation 5 is the most flamboyantly outspoken of a new generation of file-swapping companies that hope to win people from Kazaa and other popular networks by offering increased privacy.”
It seems to me their first step was a doozie, and they now need to crawl out of a self dug hole, flamboyance, while ammusing does certainly not encourage trust.
(Some text partially attributable to CNET)October 10, 2003 at 6:14 pm #89631IndyToneMemberHow many people use this? I’ve never even heard of it.

January 21, 2004 at 10:51 pm #89635faceMemberRustedTight, I was wondering if you could help me. I’ve been searching all over the web for a way to uninstall ES5, and your post is the only thing I’ve been able to find. I tried to follow your instructions, but unfortunately only the first three steps seemed applicable. After the “Delete Helmuthspeakingforboskone” step, none of the other keys appeared in my registry.
If you can help me, I’d really appreciate it. I still have 8 .dll files from ES5 on my computer that I cannot remove.
January 21, 2004 at 10:54 pm #89633shifterMemberHave you tried booting up into safe mode to remove those files?
January 22, 2004 at 12:22 am #89634faceMemberThanks for your help Shifter and RustedTight. I was able to completely remove the program.
