I just got a new laptop (meaning I have windows vista) and I got the usual stuff I put on a new computer (Spybot, Adaware, AVG and Zonealarm)
So I have two questions. Zone Alarm says it doesnt work with Vista, so what should I do? wait for an update (meanwhile using the Windows firewall) or switch to another free firewall?
next question (and probably the harder one).
AVG recently came up saying “the update was unsuccessful”. I had already gotten some updates yesterday, and the only thing that I did inbetween was get updates for Vista (probably the problem). The proxy is set up correct and everything should work, but I turned off the firewall for about 10 seconds just to see if that was the problem. it wasn’t. And I have no idea where the log is for AVG. any help would be great, thanks.June 3, 2007 at 7:45 pm #161747DavidParticipantAre you using v7.5? (get it here), have you tried to restart then apply the update again?
As for ZoneAlarm..I’ve never had a problem with the Vista firewall, it works pretty well–I’d say just use that.

as for AVG… I just did a reboot and same problem. I’m using version 7.5.472
June 4, 2007 at 1:27 am #161750PhilipModeratorThe logs for AVG are in C:Documents and SettingsUser NameApplication DataAVG7; though when I opened one up to have a look, it was all gibberish.
I’ve had unsuccessful updates in the past with AVG. What I did was to uninstall it and use a registry cleaner like jv16 Power Tools to clean up any remnants of AVG in the registry. Then do a reboot, download and install the latest version of AVG. The updates should work again.
My favorite firewall at present is Comodo Firewall Pro; a Vista beta version is supposed to come out later this month. However, I’m not in a hurry to upgrade to Vista, I’m very comfortable with my XP, thank you.
June 4, 2007 at 2:04 am #161755Soccer4dummysMemberThanks for the reply
I did eventually find it, but its in a different location in Vista (as is everything now)
C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingAVG7Seriously, I tried to find Add/remove programs… Its not there! Its under “Programs” now. How annoying. I have to scroll down now to get to it :p. I liked it better when it was the 2nd/3rd from the beginning.
anyway… back on topic. I’ll try what you said tomorrow *yawn* its too late tonight 😉
June 4, 2007 at 2:31 am #161751PhilipModeratorOh heck, I forgot you’re using Vista…sorry! That’s why I’m not going to Vista yet; Microsoft just had to change so many of the things we were familiar with in XP.

yes… but Halo 2 isn’t compatable with xp 😀
anyway, about your advice:
I was getting ready to uninstall AVG, but I couldn’t find it in the “add/remove” list! does this mean I’ll have to do a manual uninstall? if so, how would I do that? I thought that was only a rumor…June 6, 2007 at 11:19 pm #161748DavidParticipantDownload the installer and run it again, it might ask you to install/uninstall. If you can–uninstall. if you can’t, install again and see if it puts it in add/remove programs so you can uninstall.

AVG should really come up with a general uninstall tool for their products, like what Symantec and Nero have done. Otherwise it’s a real pain in the you-know-where when things go wrong. Are you listening, AVG?
June 7, 2007 at 2:20 am #161749DavidParticipantAVG is normally listed in Add/Remove programs. I would think that the software didn’t install properly, thats why the reference in Add/Remove Programs doesn’t exist, as well as the update problem.
June 9, 2007 at 4:01 pm #161757Soccer4dummysMemberyep, the reinstall worked. It got the update, and it is now in the programs list. Thanks guys!
