MemberTravelling on the bus the other day, I was unfortunate enough to have a young couple, around the age of 15, sat in the seats in front of me. Throughout my journey, which lasted an hour, they were, to put it lightly, all over each other, kissing, carressing, and such. I won’t, for the sake of censorship, go into the details. Personally, I don’t think it is pleasent to watch. For some, it may mildly irritate them, for others, it may not bother them at all, but for me, I just can’t stand Public Displays of Affection.
It has been banned in some places around the world, but what do we all think of it here?

MemberI don’t mind if it’s just a little hug or kiss (since I do it), but I hate it when people are just all on each other in public.

ParticipantI agree, It also feels akward around people doing that sort of thing, like that. Expecially if you’re sitting with one of your friends, and they’re right in front of you, interuppting you.

Participantits funny that i happen to read this now… i just finished eating dinner, and there’s a couple on campus who we (my group of friends and I) refer to as the PDA couple. no matter where we see them, they’re constantly all over each other; quite frankly, its disgusting. i agree with hurricane, i dont mind if its just a quick hug/kiss, but if you’re gonna spend that much time, do it in private. “get a room you two!” it doesnt really matter how young or old the couple is, some things you have to realize not everyone wants to see… be courteous!

KeymasterHeh, I read this topic and I was thinking of those handheld computer things…Anyway
A little peck on the lips and hug is good in my opinion, but when you see a tongue moving in the other person’s cheek and everywhere else where soon enough it gets to the point that it seems like they are cannibals, that’s a bit too much. For single people I can imagine it’s even worse to witness such an event. I personally would stick to what is considered moral in the public eye.

ParticipantDoes PDA cover holding hands?
Anyway, this is on my top 5 pet peeve list. I happen to be front with the people doing it.. it’s quite rude, and unacceptable.

MemberI was thinking hand helds too Miami. Tiger…when I was in college there was a couple in our Bio class that INSISTED on sitting near my friends and me (no matter WHERE we moved) and they were learning about Biology ALL on his own! (If you catch my drift). It IS annoying and it IS easily dealt with, here are a few ways. 1. (How we dealt with them in Bio…and a few others I have to admit) I brought Pez candy to class (there were over 100 people in class it was an intro class) one of my friends ened up destesting them, so he kept taking them and launching them at the over zealous couple. That cooled them off….after a while.
2. Get REALLY REALLY close to them…..and say “Hey…mind if I join in?”(Choose your couple wisely with this one…they MIGHT say “HECK YEAH!! The more the merrier!”)3. Grab a hose & use it. (Again, make sure that you know the couple won’t get more excited by this.
4. Find the oldest granny in the area and she’ll probably be so disgusted that she’ll say something. That way they won’t think it’s you who wanted them to stop. (Again…watch out to make sure the granny is not one of those more liberated types.).
I could go on and on…I have lots of things you could do…but when it comes down to it…they look like fools…If something REALLY bothers you…you could always say in a loud annoyed voice “GET A ROOM ALREADY!” or inform the conductor of their crappy conduct. PDA’s are best kept to palms and pocket PC’s 😀

MemberI guess I’m an exception. I have no problems with holding hands, a warm embrace, or even a slow kiss in public. It depends on the situation, of course, but as long as it doesn’t go on and on and on and on (you get the idea) I think PDAs are O.K.
Groping and really hot kissing goes beyond acceptable. That’s the point where you really need to get a room… or a car at least. 😛

MemberI’m going to agree with everyone here. It’s cute when couples hold hands. My mom still holds on to my dad’s arm sometimes when we are out. And short kisses and hugs are okay too.
I also have to say I am guilty of doing this. I was at my friend’s sorority bids party, and I was just making out with this guy in the line to go to the bathroom. But that was the only time, I swear it! Oh wait, and the other day, I was on my porch kissing this guy for what seemed like hours. But no one was around. Does that count?

Participantto Gandalf and Rae… i’m not talking about holding hands, or hugging, etc… we’re talking more about the long, drawn out, over-extended displays. i have no problem with a couple holding hands, or kissing each other in public; its when it gets to be rather intimate that it needs to be taken to a more private place. in your words, “groping and really hot kissing.”
February 4, 2005 at 10:34 pm #113697MartinBradley
MemberI don’t have a problem with holding hands, that would be hypocritical of me. Got to say though, anything excessively passionate is beyond acceptable. It should be kept for a more private moment.

MemberCompletely agreed. The PDA in our class was like; the couple were almost on top of one another (that was difficult considering it was cinema-like seating!) And they were kissing so deeply I think they could have taught the professor a thing or two about the anatomy of the mouth. I hold hands with my husband when we go out (though I have to say it used to happen more right after we first got married *sigh*), and we kiss each other quickly. That’s not the same as the things I’ve seen in public.
And Rae, sorority/Frat parties are just about the ONLY place that PDA is not so frowned on. It’s part of being in college ;).

ParticipantYeah…when I was younger, like freshman year in school I had this…girl (I think it was a girl, I would say she was jabba the hut with legs, but whatever) insisted on screaming “PDAPDAPDAPDA” And “STATATORY IS ILLEGAL” over and over when I was holding hands with my boyfriend. Yeah…what the hell.
Personally, as far as school goes, holding hands, little sweet kiss, hug and holding when talking to other people (back to front) is an all go by me. Anything beyond is not really appropriate for a high school environment.
In public, anything short of full on sex is alright in my book *shrug* parks, people kissing in a secluded area, whatever, I don’t care. Plane terminals, A-Ok. Diners, holding, hugging, little kisses, I’m eating after all and don’t want to hear heavy breathing with my pancakes and elevator music.
Groping just disturbes me in general and such though…I think because, in my eyes, it goes past the sweetness of just kissing or holding and edges into the obscene sexual aspect, which is a private affair.
But of course, I find kissing and hugging part of that sweet aspect of caring…tongue lashing and hands all over the damned place is just fleeting lust that I find ugly and pointless, and to be honest, look down upon. I’ve never once in my life been able to stomach that kind of “relation” and have never ever had anything meaningless like that in my life. Ugh, I couldn’t stand it. But that’s just me, I’m a prude, heh…February 7, 2005 at 1:18 pm #113707LLXerxes
MemberIt is distracting, especially if your lonely and single and desperate and all. THis goes back to 6th grade when one kid and another kid made out in the front (since we were in hte back) when the little fourth graders saw them they got busted.
But, man does it make you feel lonely. I don’t mind holding hands that much. or a little kiss. But if you go to school/the mall/ on the bus/ A PG rated movie with little kids (any other movie i wouldn’t give a crap about, unless I was behind them) or anywhere else in public and make out, that’s sick. You have a house for a couple of reasons, this is one of them.February 7, 2005 at 7:13 pm #113695Oreo
MemberYou bring up a really interesting thing Xerxes. When I was teaching high school in a school that was pre-school to 12th grade (two separate buildings), something like this happened. The high school kids were really out of control, they were making out in front of anyone and everyone (not my 9th graders,(the grade I was teaching at the time) I’d have told them to stop). Anyway, the fourth graders sent a petition to the HEADMASTER and asked that the high school kids stop making out in front of them because it made them uncomfortable. I would not be surprised if they went that far with teacher guidence…but I thought it was AWESOME. Of course…the kids were still going around on breaks and making out (AND MORE). But they stopped doing so in front of the kids. 🙂 Sometimes you have to just make your feelings known to the right people…and inappropriate behaviour stops 😉
