KeymasterI’m looking at getting rid of the left hand navigation menu altogether, replacing it with horizontal menu bar & submenu.
Here are some conceptual images of the header for your feedback.
A. Home page header

B. IM Centers menu option highlighted and submenu revealed. I also added a drop-shadow to the menu bar

C. Same as above, but with the submenu background lightened

D. Now with the selected menu a little lighter and the text colorized.

E. Now with the selected menu in contrasting color.

F. Now with the selected menu in contrasting color.

G. A slimmer alternative

H. Incorporating Hotmop’s ideas.

I. Light version, but without the solid background for the submenu.

J. Same as Option I, but with drop-shadow back in.

MemberI like the idea of the submenus, that way we can have more sections as well as a good looking menu.

ParticipantLooks pretty good so far. I prefer D– “Now with the selected menu a little lighter and the text colorized.” I also like the idea of having sub menu’s rather than the IM balloons on the top right (do most users even realize they are buttons?). Plus if you put the adverts up in the top right we could gain back alot of that precious real estate at the top of the page. The darker sky gives it less of that vibrant happy blue appearance… a little more edgy, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing IMO.
Definately not E, that green ain’t workin for me.

ParticipantOh it looks excellent, with or without the drop down shadow, I give two thumbs up!
Just one thing though, call me crazy but I’ve found navigating on submenus with a laptop sans mouse is… an “interesting experience”? Regardless, still two thumbs up.

ParticipantOh but Jeff, not the “contrasting color” one. It just… isn’t working. 😮

MemberI like the one that has the selected menu highlighted (but as Anna says, the color is a bit “too” different.) Suggest that the bar behind the top level menus be a solid color (light light blue or white?) rather than have transparency. Otherwise, it appears a bit smudgy. (That’s a word… you can look it up.) Also, no need for the drop shadow below the bar… keep it clean.
Also regarding magistyk’s comment about the dark sky, why not fade up to white! Would show off the Big Blue Ball.
One lurker’s solicited comments.

ParticipantSkies generally fade from a lighter bottom to a darker top, but it does seem to work in this case. Also the rest of the site has a white background, having white on top as well might be too much?

I thought you loved drop shadows! :p
I’m not pleased with the mix of depth and the “flatness” of a solid band of color.

MemberI would have to go with D, the green on E stands out too much from the others and is much too diffrent from the colors of the submenus. But I also like the look of a brighter background like on H, It gives it a light glow at the top. I think if you compare it with the bright blue and white around the rest of the layout a lighter background like H’s would be better.

KeymasterI’ve added one more option. I’m currently favoring either Option D or
I HJ (I had J mis-labeled; there were two H’s).January 5, 2004 at 5:20 am #86556detn8r
ParticipantI’d say D.
