MemberWhat do you think is the best I.Pod to buy?
I want to get one, and I only want the best, that can hold the most songs/pictures/videos, etc.May 10, 2005 at 1:16 pm #121248Qwerty
MemberThere is no “best”. It really depends on your requirements. eg: How many files you need to hold, how big your pocket is, how big is your budget? ect..
From the sounds of you post, it sounds like you want the Ipod with the biggest capacity. I’m not entirly 100% sure but I think there is a 40gb Ipod photo. Check the website. ( http://www.ipod.com for america).

ParticipantNo MP3 player can play video’s as you request. Perhaps you would want to check out the Sony PSP for that.
After the four months of having my iPod, I would seriously recommend that you do not purchase one. Mainly, they are very over rated, and very over priced.
After being an unhappy iPod user, I would seriously recommend to you the 5GB(+) Creative Zen Micro. Check your local store (Best Buy) for information about the model. In Canada, they are about $300 so; they’d be fairly cheap in the US. They also play much more file types and can also hold jpgs. With the Zen Micro, you don’t have to worry about getting the white click wheel dirty, (and trust me it gets very dirty {under the buttons} very fast).
Since I bought my iPod back in December 04, I’ve had to service it once and had 2 sets of their ear buds replaced. The sound quality (especially the EQ settings) and the worst on the MP3 player market. The factory ear buds have terrible sound quality and are tipped with stainless steel. The much cheaper Mpio comes with gold tipped ear buds. The difference in the Mpio and iPod is disgustingly incomparable, in favor of the Mpio.
I believe the only plus side to the iPod is Apple’s excellent warranty system. You can service your iPod and within a week you have a replacement, no questions asked. And believe you me, without that you’d have many more unhappy users.
I can go on, but I just hope you are not going to be an ignorant iPod fan boy without getting to know anything about it first. Before I bought my iPod, I asked BBB members to help me choose between the iPod and iRiver. iPod was in very favorable position among members (even those without one), so I bought one. In the end, I wouldn’t want neither of them (except the possibility of the iRiver H10).
Anyway, I paid $500 for my iPod MINI (with a 3 year in-store warranty). That is a hell of a lot more than the iPod is worth.May 10, 2005 at 7:09 pm #121255bronxy
MemberIpods do play videos
i was asking in bestbuy today and they said you could upload videos to them.i think i am going to get the Ipod 20gig one, it holds 5,000 songs and is only $299
I could get the 60gig one, but thats like $500May 10, 2005 at 7:16 pm #121236Jeff Hester
KeymasterWell I’ve heard the international version of the I-River H320 can play videos. The US one can too but you have to install something in it (I think it’s called firmware) but that voids your warranty in the US.
Bronxy if there is a BJ’s Wholesale Club store near you then you should check it out. They have the 20gig Ipod for $270 but of course you have to have membership with BJ’s to buy it.

You can store videos on your Ipod (it can reserve space for file storage), but you can’t actually watch them on your Ipod.I have had 3 different Ipods myself, and ended up sticking with the Ipod Mini. At first I bought a 20GB original, but found the size of the player itself to be somewhat big. Then I got the Shuffle, but found it to be lacking in space when compared to the amount of music I have. I now have a 4GB Mini, and am pleased with it. The only thing I regret about buying an Ipod is that I am stuck with Itunes for music, and Apple is yet to come out with a subscription service.
– If you have thousands of songs or are really into photography, then I would get the original or photo.
– If you want to use your Ipod while excerisizing, then get the Shuffle. I once played basketball while I had it on and experienced no trouble. And if you have a small song library (100-200), then I would suggest a Shuffle.
– If you are more in the middle (around 1000 songs) and want to be able to keep your Ipod strapped onto your clothes and walk around in public with “style”, then I would suggest a Mini. It looks sexy, its small, and it has a reasonable amount of space.
EDIT: Detn8r, don’t base your Ipod on the headphones. They are of course, pretty crappy. I blew mine out the first week I had them and moved on to get a pair of Sony Fontopia earphones for 50$. I love them. And also keep in mind that the Ipod is 200$. I’m not sure how Dent8r managed to spend 500$ 😉

MemberI am also looking around for an MP3 player for my birthday that is coming up. I am looking for something with about 4 or 5 GB of space. I also run a lot so I would like to be able to go running with it. I have been looking at the Ipod Mini, but after reading detn8r’s post I am now looking at other ones. I want my MP3 player to be stylish yet actually work good. I don’t want to have to replace in for another few years either.

I was talking about the Ipod Mini when I said 200$. Thanks for pointing that out though, I didn’t notice it was all so much more expensive.Shuffle 512MB – 100$
Shuffle 1GB – 150$
Ipod Mini 4GB – 200$
Ipod Mini 6GB – 250$
Ipod 20GB – 300$
Ipod 20GB U2 – 350$
Ipod Photo 30GB – 350$
Ipod Photo 60GB – 450$EDIT: Colin, I would suggest getting the Zen Micro then. The 4GB is 180$, the 5GB is 230$, and the 6GB is 260$

MemberYes I have been looking at this, and it looks pretty cool. I especially like that is has an extra GB for the same price of the Ipod, and I also like the FM tuner. After looking at reviews for these for over an hour, I am almost certain this is what I want. At first I did not like the design of the buttons at all, but now it is starting to grow on me.
I have 2 major concerns however. First, I have read the the navigation is somewhat difficult on this player. Does anyone that has one on the site agree or disagree with that? Also, I need to know if I will be able to run with it. It is a HD player as opposed to flash, so I am not really sure. If anyone can answer these two questions, I would really appreciate it.

ParticipantZen Micro is HDD. It’s almost perfect 🙂 As I said, no worries about getting the click wheel dirty, and of course the iPod is idiot proof for navigation, but getting something you need to read the manual for, or find out your self is what being a technology geek is all about!
And Kyle, I said that iPod has the worst sound quality in the MP3 market. Their EQ settings absolutely suck. Try listening to an Mpio then iPod. If you’re an audiophile you’ll be pissed 😉
iPod mini is very heavy. I’ve had the experience of having it on my lap and forgetting it was there, sitting up and slam, face first onto the pavement. It’s definitely got some war wounds.
It’s not worth it. Too many people believe that you need an iPod to look like you have money, or to look cool. pfft… it makes me mad when I see people with iPods. They’re supposed to be something no one has. Every other kid has one. Go for the Zen Micro. No one has them, very stylish, very reasonably priced and includes many more things factory that iPod doesn’t.

ParticipantThis is my list of pros and cons. It’s obvious that the cons out weigh the pros in my case, but anyone else with an iPod please feel free to add your own list. Keep in mind that this is with an iPod mini (first generation).
Pros:
Apple warranty
Easy (idiot proof) navigation
Calandar, alarm, address (vcard) books
AAC format
Click wheel
Mod hacks – games, use on Linux, imagesCons:
Terrible factory ear bud head phones
Terrible sound quality, especially when using any of the EQ settings
Very heavy
The white click wheel gets dirty very fast and a bitch to clean
Battery life sucks (especially on first generation ipod mini)
Manually fast forwarding songs KILLS the battery life
No longer includes AC adapter wall charger
Doesn’t hold the 1000 songs unless they are uploaded at a 128kb bit rate
Must use iTunes for music transfer
Dents very easily
Not enough file formats to upload as musicMay 11, 2005 at 10:44 pm #121251colin
MemberDoes anyone on the forums have a Creative Zen Micro? If so, does it skip when you run for long times (I run for 40 minutes to an hour a day)? Also, is the navigation difficult? I have heard that it is very difficult.

When compared to the Ipods click wheel, every other MP3 player is considered to have difficult navigation (even though most others are perfectly fine).Detn8r, does the Creative Muvo have much better sound quality than the Ipod, or is that just the MPIO. Because I will look into the Muvo if it does.

ParticipantSomeyou,
EVERY MP3 player has a better sound quality than iPod. As I said, iPod ranks in last place (not officially, just among users). Go to bestbuy.com and look at their discription. Also, take a look at this review: http://www.playerblog.com/archives/000454.shtml
