What’s the best MP3 player to use?
I use currently use Winamp, but I want a player like iTunes that can handle multiple playlists and it can arrange songs by artists, albums, etc. I don’t use iTunes because it uses up more memory than Winamp.
Is there a player like Winamp, but with those features that I mentioned?
January 31, 2006 at 11:41 am #137534DrBroccoliParticipantThere are just two of the thousands :P. Also, Windows Media Player has playlists as well.

Does everything you want and more, including playlists, smart playlists, ID3 Tags, Media Conversion, ACC/MP3/Audio CD Burning, Equalizer, Podcasts, Internet Radio, Music Videos, and integrates with LimeWire. Best of all, it’s free.

Having quite a bit of memory is pretty standard now, and you can’t run much of anything without minimum 512MB these days. I had a LAN Party a few weeks ago, and regardless of what I was doing (gaming, coding, etc) I always had iTunes open, and it would never skip or slow my system down. Currently, I’m showing a reading of just under 20MB os RAM used for iTunes…surely your computer can run it, even an older verison?
February 2, 2006 at 2:39 am #137524shifterMemberSo true Spike, I had a little look-see at my iTunes memory, and it’s hogging a whole 13,116 K. My Firefox is using more than that at the moment!
MediaMonkey is pretty much an iTunes clone, and I’d be surprised if it used less memory! I guess it may depend on your system, but media managing software does require a bit of memory now and then!
February 2, 2006 at 3:27 am #137522DavidParticipantRemember that the memory footprint for iTunes or any media player will be proportionally related to the number and size of your playlists loaded including the media library. I’m using 25mb right now and that’s pretty normal. Although perhaps the two programs connected to the COM are taking some memory too–I don’t know
But 25MB is quite reasonable, compared to my Firefox at 174mb, and explorer at 40mb.
February 5, 2006 at 8:51 pm #137535DrBroccoliParticipantI found the iTunes Multi-Plugin awhile back while trying to find something to get media buttons on a keyboard/laptop to work with itunes while it’s not focused, and I found that. Not only does it make buttons work, it has a “run iTunes in low memory mode when minimized to tray”. I tried it out, for craps and giggles, and it made my 25MB iTunes go to less than 5MB while playing a song. Not only did it do that, I changed my iTunes font, changed the visualizer to go to my monitors native resolution, and it skins iTunes.
Maybe you could try that, I still use it in low memory mode, and I don’t really need to, and I’ve noticed NO slow downs, skips, quality loss or anything, that little plugin it quite amazing.
(Oh yeah, I am back.)
February 15, 2006 at 4:26 am #137540GoldenKnight8987MemberI know this is going to stick out like a sore thumb, but I like Windows Media Player 10… lol… I have never tried itunes or anything because one thing I REALLLLY like about WMP is that is has an enhancement plugin called SRS WOW Effects, and it adds a lot of bass and enhances the music a lot. It’s just nice to have on a surround sound system. But if anyone could find me a plugin for itunes that does that, it’d be cool to try…. but for now WMP 10 does the job…. veryyyy good.
February 16, 2006 at 4:27 am #137530SpikeMemberErm, sorry to break this to you, but the “SRS WOW” Effects are for less-than-5.1 systems. It’s designed to add “3D” to the music and make it seem deeper than it really is. You want more bass? Tell the iTunes Equalizer or just add some in the Windows Sound properties. But, honestly? SRS Effects are junk. If you have a 5.1 system, iTunes works with it. It even has its own equalizer (and does a better job of it than WMP, that’s for sure) that you can mess areound with to get the exact sound you want. iTunes has a much better interface, too, getting around in iTunes will seem like a breeze compared to WMP. Really, you should try it out, it’s worth your time.
February 16, 2006 at 11:35 pm #137537MrEggsaladParticipantYeah, I used to use WMP also, and their “effects”. Like Spike said, designed for the lower speaker systems…like ones that are crap. SRS WOW Effects really aren’t that great, yeah fun to play with, but meh, didn’t help me that much. I just HAVE NOT found anything better than iTunes. Yes, memmory is a big thing, currently for me I’ve got Firefox at 25k, explorer at 28k, iTunes at 40k (with 310 songs), and heh, Windows Live Messenger at 44k. So, yeah it’s kinda high, but I don’t see anything that does a better job.
February 19, 2006 at 5:00 am #137541GoldenKnight8987MemberI will eventually try it one day, but I mean you could have said it a little nicer dude, didnt have to totally degrade it. Makes me feel like an idiot for speaking my current opinion. Sorry, but yeah, I thought i’d let you know. Thanks for understanding, Spike. And thanks for the info.

And thanks for the info.i thought Spike did a good job of providing information about that particular feature in a way that didn’t degrade your opinion. your opinion is perfectly valid. it’s your opinion. you’re entitled to hold it, and others are entitled to theirs.
in any case, i still prefer winamp. iTunes takes too much memory usage for my liking, and i just havent had the motivation to switch to any other player.

Thanks for that, Tigerblade. By the way, have you tried ShadowdogMU’s little program that reduces the iTunes memory by quite a bit? Maybe that’ll be a little more motivation, but, like you said, you are entitled to your opinion, and I hold an opinion in the same regards as a preference. 😉 -
