I have a shortcut to our forum page.
At work and on my home pc, it is taking ages to load. It seems to have been like this for about a week and it’s getting worse.
Anyone else having the same problem?

Could be better, but it’s not bad. And the forum index page will be probably the slowest on the site because of all the queries it uses. Other pages should be even faster.
I also checked the server loads:
Server Load Averages 0.58 0.67 0.78 | 916 Users Online (5 members and 911 guests)
Generally speaking, anything under 1.0 is good, so the server is not overloaded. It could be your cache settings (I set mine to “automatic”) or it could be a bottleneck somewhere in the network. This can be evaluated using tracert to see how many “hops” it takes to find bigblueball.com and the the time for a response to traverse the net.
But for starters, Sarah, how long does it take to load the forum index once you hit “login?”

I just tried clearing all cookies, temporary files, the works, and re-loading BBB – from the forum landing, signing in and loading the new posts took about 3-4 seconds.

I just did a quick check, and the load is (as of right now) in excess of 1.1 (at ~1000 online users), I’m going to look into this and see if I can track down a bottleneck. I’m still seeing good speed though, under 4s for the main page, and ~1s for all other pages.
May 14, 2008 at 5:43 pm #169399sarahtownyMemberI tried going to the main page first, then going to the forum, still slow. I have to say once the page had loaded, login is quick.
May 14, 2008 at 5:49 pm #169389Jeff HesterKeymasterCould you time it please, Sarah?
May 14, 2008 at 6:02 pm #169400sarahtownyMemberI used a stop watch hehe and it took 22 seconds, that was better than normal.
May 14, 2008 at 6:13 pm #169393DavidParticipantI’ve checked the logs over the past half hour, and for all hits to /forums/index.php, the maximum time for the server to generate the page was 7 seconds, with an average of 4 seconds.
I’m pretty confident that your problem is mostly in connection. I don’t have your IP so I can’t trace your host, but you can run a speed test and let us know what kind of speed you have to the USA.
May 14, 2008 at 6:44 pm #169401sarahtownyMemberThank you David, I did your test my download speed was 130 kbps and my upload speed was 366 kbps. Whatever that means :0)
May 14, 2008 at 7:02 pm #169394DavidParticipantThat means your connection is a piece of crap (to be perfectly honest, sorry).
130kbps, which is 16KB/sec is how fast you can pull data from the internet.
index.php is ~19KB, so thats one second to load, on top of the actual load time (so T=[5,8] at this point)
The images on the page are probably another 20KB or so. The javascript and css files are another few KB, pulling down the ad contents is another few… it adds up, and since your connection is slow (and likely high latency–the time it takes for data to move), it is likely that all this combined results in a lackluster experience. Part of the problem could be your browser though, as it may be configured to wait until the page is fully downloaded before displaying. What browser are you using?May 14, 2008 at 7:23 pm #169402sarahtownyMemberIE but sometimes I do use Firefox and that is no different
May 14, 2008 at 7:25 pm #169395DavidParticipantDoes the page load partially (e.g. the top banner), and then there is a long delay for the rest of the layout to appear? If so, we could perhaps do something about this in firefox.
May 14, 2008 at 7:28 pm #169403sarahtownyMemberYep it does
