Well friends problem with me is this that my English is very week, specily I don’t know practical kind of Enlish. Would you please list words like blink, blink, giggles* Awww, shurg and their defination.. Any other idea, any new kind of words, specily the words used on net.
December 14, 2004 at 8:48 pm #108820MartinBradleyMemberBlink – The action of quickly opening and shutting the eyes in order to stop them freezing open. Can be used on the Internet in instant messaging to indicate suprise or disbelief at something. Google says: …briefly shut the eyes; “The TV announcer never seems to blink”…
Giggles – Basically, a form of laughter.Google says:…laugh nervously; “The girls giggled when the rock star came into the classroom”…
Aww – Could be an expression of sympathy, or possibly an expression of softness towards a person.
The last one, I think you mean “Shrug” rather than “Shurg”. So i’ll give the definition to “Shrug”.
Shrug – The action of shrugging the shoulders. Used in instant messaging it is used to convey body language. Might be used in response to a statement which the subject doesn’t have much knowledge of, or something which isn’t of high importance.Google says:…raise one’s shoulders to indicate indifference or resignation…
Alot of these things are used to show body language and convey emotions when instant messaging. Alternatively, emoticons, or smilies can be used.
EDIT – Where possible, I’ve included the Google definition for the term next to my definition in red.
December 14, 2004 at 9:00 pm #108828AqeelParticipantMartin thanks for the information. Would you tell any new kind of words or any other idea, so that I can get more comfartable with the words used. Such as; Once some body from Australia asked me online, “that’s really gota suck,” I don’t know the exact meanings of that phrase. It just sounded me like, ‘that’s amazing’, am I right?
December 14, 2004 at 9:06 pm #108822TigerbladeParticipantif something’s “really gotta suck” it means its something that the person thought was not favorable, something they did not like. “suck” is basically slang for “is bad” (in this case)… “that sucks” usually means something like “i’m sorry that happened”
according to dictionary.com, the slang use means “To be disgustingly disagreeable or offensive.”
December 14, 2004 at 9:10 pm #108819OreoMemberActually when something “sucks” it means that it’s a bad thing. It’s much akin to when something “Bites” as in “That bites the big one.” When something sucks you would use it in such way as “Hey, I broke my toe when I kicked the wall!” “That totally SUCKS!” Might be the reply. OR “Movie tickets have gotten more expensive AGAIN!” “This really sucks…let’s start to rent movies” OR “This car SUCKS….it is all rusty and doesn’t have good gas mileage.” I hope that helped. Your English is very good and we can help you out with the slang…there are ALL sorts of things to learn and of course just like any language…there are different slang words in different countries and even within the countries in different regions. 🙂
*Darn you Tigerblade….you beat me again with your nimble typing fingers* I hope this helped you anyway Aqeel.
December 14, 2004 at 9:33 pm #108825gossipingraeMemberwhen I was in german class in high school, one of our homework assignments was to go into a german chat room and try and pick up on different slang used. there were people in there and part of their slang was “n8” and I was thinking to myself, “wtf is nate?” after a long period of blank staring at the computer, I realized what they were saying. when you say the number 8 in german, it is pronounced “acht” and when they put an ‘n’ in front of it, it read “nacht.” “nacht” in german means night, so they were all signing off, saying goodnight! it’s pretty cool what you can figure out in different languages.

December 15, 2004 at 12:57 am #108823RabidKittenParticipantYeah, I’m sorry about that ageel, I realize that my style of typing especially must be hard to follow because I use actions a lot. I’m sorry, it comes as a bad bad habbit from roleplay typing all the time. People there type out actions as if they were actually there and interact with one another, so it gets to be a habbit even in regular conversation sometimes. Every time I end up putting **’s around something, it’s just an action…it kind of helps tell people what kind of tone I’m speaking in too, since you obviously can’t “hear” sadness, disbelief, sarcasm, anger or anything like that. It really is just my way of using emoticons (smilies) since I hate the big yellow buggers.
December 15, 2004 at 1:04 am #108821MartinBradleyMemberGood point actually there RK. Ageel, anything in asterisks usually shows an action.
Oh Sam, don’t stop putting all your little bits in asterisks, it makes your posts interesting to read!
December 15, 2004 at 1:10 am #108826gossipingraeMemberi took that idea from sam as well…ooops! well rabid’s asterisks and crazy penguins were already taken.
I KNOW! I will use [] from now on! so no one take it! lol
