MemberI need to find a way to keep people from using IE on my computer, without actually getting rid of it. I’ll need it for other programs, but some people refuse to listen to me when I say not to use IE and I find that I’m the one cleaning a spyware infected PC every week. Removing the icons won’t work because my brother knows where IE is located and will just go make a new shortcut.
Also, I still want to have access to IE so that I can run windows update and use it on stubborn sites. It would be great if I could password protect it. Or even better, only allow my account to have access. Can anyone help me out?

Participantok well what OS are you on? i’m using XP Home, so if you have something else it might be slightly different…
1. Open up the command prompt… you can do this by clicking Start -> Run, then type cmd or finding it through the start menu accessories folder somewhere.
2. change the directory to the directory immediately above the IE folder… for example, on my computer IE is in C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer, so I typed this command:Quote:quote:cd C:Program Files3. type the following to bring up the help options for replacing permissions
Quote:quote:CACLS /help4. when I tried this, this is what I entered:
Quote:quote:CACLS “internet explorer” /T /p accountname:Nwhat that does is change the permissions for the directory you specify, in this case Internet Explorer, and all its subdirectories… then the /P replaces the specified user’s permission for that folder to N for None
if that doesnt work, let me know

KeymasterJust put all sites in the restircted zone……..
And put a password on it,then when they use it,it will ask for a pass……….
Goto OPTIONS/CONTENT and enable the content advisor and just dont put any sites in it………
Problem solved!!!!!!!!!

ParticipantBlocking IExplore won’t stop anything, you can visit websites with Windows Explorer, and blocking that would mean that you have no shell…
Maybe just disable ActiveX and Java/JS in IE?

MemberFace it, Internet Explorer is integrated into Windows so badly you won’t get it out of there. What you could do, if you really want to get rid of it, is look at installing another OS. 😉

MemberThat didn’t even occur to me David but your right. Disabling ActiveX and Java would work to stop spyware, but I know I’ll hear complaining about websites not working properly. Well.. what I just wanted to do was to force him to use Firefox or Opera because he doesn’t listen to me. Maybe I’ll just use physical force on him instead.
I’d REALLY like to switch to linux. Except that then I won’t be able to play games.

…If it were me, I’d just tell him to use it that way, or not use it at all.
Oh, and Linux 0wnz! (I like Fedora too)

MemberHe doesn’t listen. He doesn’t believe that its IE that brings in all this spyware and he thinks that Mozilla is just as likely to do the same thing.
But yeah, I just tried the Knoppix live cd to see what linux was like and it was really nice. Running it from cd was kind of slow but I was suprised how much crap they fit on there.

you’re the admin of your computer, right? tell him if he doesn’t listen, you’ll either remove his account, or password protect it and not tell him the password until he agrees with you

Memberhaha, well he has admin rights too. I figured I’d give him the ability to change things himself, of course I could change it to restricted. Thats a fight I want to avoid for now.
