Vista Home Premium
HP DV6000 series laptop
Targus USB 2.0 BT Dongle ACB10US
Plantronics 590A BT headsetNow that YH voice is working again, I’m trying to get my headset to work on Vista. It works just fine on my XP laptop with the same BT dongle.
I installed the drivers for the BT device from the mfr site & I can discover the headset (it shows both as a headset for audio only & as a headset with mic just as it’s supposed to.) But when I try to connect I get the error “No Local Bluetooth Device was Detected” despite the fact the headset is on and ready to go.
I’ve googled till I’m googled out! Vista says my device is working properly. I’ve changed the sound and recording to the bluetooth device as the default in case it wanted them default before connecting. Obviously, since I can’t connect in BT I can’t test them in the sound settings. (The headset comes with an audio only BT adapter which works fine with Vista – but it’s 1 way only as it plugs only into the speaker jack & is useless for using the headset as a mic).
I’m at a total loss here. YH just got voice back & I can’t get the headset to work! I did find a Microsoft Hotfix for USB Audio issues (tho it’s not been sent thru Microsoft updates yet) & installed it in desparation with no success. The closest I came to an answer was this VERY lenghty post Dev-Hack.com :: View topic – UnCrippling Bluetooth in Windows Vista RTM but I don’t know enough about BT to be sure it’s a viable (or smart) solution to my problem. Any ideas are most welcome!!!

I’m not a bluetooth expert, so I won’t say the following will cure your problem, but you can try!
- The fact that your dongle works in the other computer eliminates a malfunction.
- Is there any program that is installed with the dongle? If so, try running it in compatibility mode for XP SP2.
- Really grasping at straws here, but maybe you could try a dongle from a different manufacturer.
I’ve read through the post and link that you mentioned. It is a very convoluted way of getting bluetooth to work in Vista. I wouldn’t try it unless (1) you like taking risks (or am just plain desperate) and (2) you make a backup of your existing Vista system first.
Apologies for not really offering you a solution, but I’ll keep you posted if I find anything relevant. Good luck 🙂
P/S I just visited the Targus website. It seems this bluetooth dongle requires a Vista driver. So assuming you’ve downloaded and installed it, there could be a problem with the driver.

Used CD (which previously failed installation) to reinstall and DID NOT connect the dongle when it asked, but continued install without it. When done, Vista seemed to install necessary drivers on it’s own. So in essence removed all the Vista drivers I had downloaded from Targus.
Able to connect to headset BUT when I went into YH to do call setup it died when I tried to test with (BT in-line mic.) Reopened and tested mic but died on speaker setup (BT high quality audio). Tried a 3rd time – figuring that would be the charm and it went thru call setup ok. However, when I tried voice conference it immediately switched back over to speakers and built in mic.
Will do more testing later tonight but I’m sure it’s some setting for BT at this point. I had not yet set them as the default devices as I really didn’t want the headset to be the default for sound, tho I don’t really care about the mic (since HP hasn’t fixed the mic boost problem on the internal with new drivers as of yet.)
Thanks for the post Philip – the CD had failed on at least 2 previous occasions when I connected the dongle as asked, but you got me to try one more time and I’m part of the way there!

For the 2nd time when installing hardware that “should” work with Vista, it says it can’t find drivers (even when pointed directly to the downloaded files) and I’ve had to tell it to look in the C:WindowsSystem32 folder (including subfolders) so it can find the “generic” drivers, and only then have I been able to get things working the way they should.
Anyway….headphones and YH voice working great now. Just thought I’d post the location for the “generic” drivers in case anyone comes upon this same issue with regard to hardware. I’ve used it for a USB wireless mouse and the BT so far. I’ll update if I find it doesn’t work at some point, but thus far it’s been a lifesaver.

September 7, 2007 at 4:01 pm #163905PhilipModeratorThanks for the heads up, Doris. Which goes to prove three points:
- The machines don’t rule us.
- Humans will outsmart machines anytime.
- To err is human, to really foul things up requires a computer.
:p
