So… I just bought a GameCube off eBay yesterday. My gf and I were playing Super Smash Brothers for the N64 (the only console system I’ve ever owned), and decided I needed to get my own Cube (since I no longer have roommates with one).
So now I need to go get some controllers and some games. First on the list is Super Smash Brothers Melee, but that’s also all that’s on the list. I need ideas for other good games. I’ve played Rogue Squadron and some sort of WWII-esque first-person-shooter, but otherwise nada.
Suggest away. Preferably stuff I can get on the cheap. Not a big fan of sports games, so don’t suggest things like Madden or whatever, but otherwise I’m all ears.

With that said, you’ve come to the right place, man. Being a Nintendo person myself, I can definitely think of some must-have Gamecube titles that you would enjoy. Although it wasn’t the most popular of all consoles, it definitely has some damn good games. So I’ll just shutup right now and proceed to list off some classic, high-profile games from the GC library:
Resident Evil 4 – This is an epic game in every sense of the word. It’s an action-packed survival-horror title that will keep you on edge for a very long time. Basically, in terms of the plot, it involves visiting a remote area in Spain in order to save the president’s daughter. Things become downright creepy from there. The controls are top-notch, the graphics are the best the gamecube has to offer, and blasting off zombie’s heads has never been more fun. Get it now. You don’t even have to read the rest of this list if you don’t want. Just get in your car, go down to the store and but it now.
Metroid Prime – This is a Science-fiction/adventure/first-person-shooter/whatever type of game that was an amazing step forward for the old Metroid series. Even if it doesn’t sound that interesting, buy it anyway, because it’s cheap now, and again, it’s a damn good game. Many people would agree that this is probably the greatest Gamecube game of all. It should take you a while to beat, too.
Resident Evil – While Resident Evil 4 was a huge change in the resident evil franchise, “Resident Evil” for the gamecube (It’s also called Resident Evil remake) sticks to the traditional old RE formula, which relies on pure creepiness rather than action and explosions. Everything about this game is creepy: The camera angles, the graphics, the lighting effects (swinging chandeliers, candle flames), music… everything. Play it in the middle of the night with the lights turned down, and you can get quite a scare when you walk next to that door in the hallway and a zombie suddenly bursts out of it.
Eternal Darkness – This is another really unique and revolutionary gamecube game that I think you would really enjoy, tigerblade. One of the things that made this game great is the epic and deep storyline, which is uncommon for a lot of video games. You play as different people in different time periods, ranging from ancient times to modern times. It’s another survival horror game (you can tell I like horror) that has an interesting twist: It actually makes you feel insane while playing it. What happens when your sanity meter starts going low? The camera angle tilts. Small bugs might start crawling across the screen. Your TV might suddenly turn off. Heck, there was one time when I was playing it, and all of the sudden my gamecube got the blue screen of death, which is actually pretty funny. Think I’m kidding? “Sanity effects” are features that the developers really put into the game, in order to literally make you feel like you’re going nutty. This is one of the things that made Eternal darkness so great. You never know what kind of tricks the game is going to play on you. Again, everything else about this game is awesome, it’s atmospheric, it’s creepy, and it’s very intriguing. Another must-have.
Super Monkey Ball – I guess this is where I’ll start getting out of the mature titles and into the more casual/mellow ones that you would play at a party, for example. Put simply: You’re a monkey inside of a ball, and you roll around in dozens of different tracks and environments. It’s fun. Trust me.
F-Zero GX – One of the greatest futuristic-racing games of all time? Probably. It’s addictive, the controls are great, and the graphics are slick as can be. Combine that with a soundtrack that actually takes up a few places in my music library, and you have a dang good game.
I may add more later, but for now, I really hope that you can check these games out.
When you look at a video game, there are multiple factors that can either make it or break it, such as controls (is the button layout awkward, or comfortable?), graphics (does it make my eyes bleed?), and overall replay-value (Is this fun enough to play several times over?). The reason why I picked these games is that they excel in all of these areas, as well as other areas that I didn’t really explain. So again, if you could give these titles a go, then great. I also somewhat hand-picked them especially for you, Tom. Obviously if you were a twelve-year-old girl, for example, I would have recommended something else. Just to let you know.
I hope this is a good overview.

Metroid is definitely on my list of games to get. Never played it (even way back in the NES days) but want to.
Eternal Darkness looks… interesting. I’ll see about that one.
Any others? It’d be good to get a few party-appropriate games too, like Mario Kart or the like.

Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes a must get its Metal Gear Solid One but the elements and features of Metal Gear Solid 2 are incorporated and you can see shadow moses in first person perspective and its all revamped in 3D. There are also new weapons for you to try

I was all excited thinkin’ they were makin’ a comeback.:rolleyes:November 7, 2007 at 1:58 am #165199VvWolverinevVParticipantGamespot takes game rating really seriously. You pretty much can’t go wrong with one of their “editors’ choice” games. 😀
From my experience, I can say that RE4 for PS2 was definitely fun to play, and Super Monkey Ball is a great party game. But, don’t you just wanna blow stuff up on XBox 360 with Gears of War… :p

Play it with 2 or 3 other people, and it’s shocking at how fast it can kill time. =)
Particularly Mario Party 7, if you can.
November 7, 2007 at 3:22 am #165193TigerbladeParticipantWell I’ve picked up both Smash Brothers and F-Zero GX, so now I just have to wait for the cube itself to show up. *agony*
I suppose I could try Mario Party. It always looked to me like a lame game, but in all fairness I’ve never actually played it.

In all seriousness, Mario Party is a lot more interesting than it may look. One of the reasons it’s great for parties is the fact that there are times when you can be relaxed and grab a drink while someone is on their turn, and there are other times when you’re frantically mashing buttons and you may just find yourself trying to screw up your friend next to you in order to prevent them from winning a minigame.
