Pardon my computer-illiterate-ness, but for the past few days my browser (Firefox) seems to lock up whenever a java application tries to run. I first noticed it when playing (or trying to get to) Yahoo games. Sometimes I can get in, others times not even into the lobby. But even when I can get in it’s so slow that I find other things to keep myself busy with while waiting for the card to be played, for example, and I end up not really playing the game. It has also happened when going to other websites that have pictures that change as well. The little java cup comes up and next thing I know I’m having to close the whole thing because it is nonresponsive. Grrrrr – this is making me nuts. 😡 I downloaded the latest version of java this afternoon in hopes of getting around this somehow, but . . . well, no dice.
Any ideas, oh computer gurus?

January 17, 2007 at 3:15 am #156977PhilipModeratorHi there, Polar Bear:
This is not a cop-out, but have you tried another browser like IE6 or IE7? I don’t use Firefox myself, but I have IE7 and Opera 9 in my system. Whenever IE doesn’t behave properly, I’d switch to Opera. I know some people don’t like Opera, but the latest version seems to be quite stable. Get it here Opera web browser: Homepage
This is probably a band-aid solution, I won’t deny that. But sometimes it’s better than swearing at the computer 🙂
Footnote: I just tried going to the Yahoo Games website in Opera. It loads up fast; unfortunately it says “Gametap is not available in your country” :crying: Bummer. But I didn’t get any error messages or whatever. Hope this helps.
I went to Play Games – Free Online Games, Free Downloadable Games at Shockwave in Opera to try and see whether I could play their online games. After a prompt to download and install Macromedia Shockwave Player, it was possible to play online. Thought you’d like to know.

I do have dial up so I presumed it was the issue — every time a site embedded something with Java Firefox would become VERY laggy and basically unresponsive (even though I was able to right-click and navigate file menus, no action would actually perform). It did clear up once the Java applet finished loading.
I hate Java :p
I don’t think there was a solution for myself, I just always believed it was because of my Internet connection speed.
January 17, 2007 at 11:55 am #156976PolarBearNPRParticipantThanks for all of your advice. I have been thinking of changing to IE7, but just haven’t done that yet. If I’m awake this afternoon I’ll give that a try and see if it helps. And det – that’s exactly what happens to me, but sometimes the applet doesn’t even load and I sit there looking at a white box, wishing for something to appear. (And I have DSL)
However, I’m having a sinking feeling that this may be more than what I initially thought . . . last night I tried to open a word document and that simple act locked up that program; but that has happened before. And my YIM hasn’t wanted to sign me in straight away, since about the same time as the problem with the games. Again, one of those program-not-responding type deals.
I’ll see what I can do . . . and if anything else occurs to you, please let me know. If all else fails, I may have to ask a local computer guy for some assistance :p Either that or spring for a plane ticket.
Well, tonight I’ve had no problems  and the only thing I’ve changed is the java version  whatever, at least I got to play tonight. 😀
