MemberHey, I’ve had a crazy buddy icon disaster tonight…
I’m currently on a loaner laptop (since mine is getting fixed) and I can’t get buddy icons to work anywhere…I first downloaded 6.0.xxxx from the AIM website, and in place of the icons (and the smilies) I just got red Xes. I tried resetting my buddyicon and changing it, it didn’t make a difference.
Then, I uninstalled it and installed AIM 5.9.8xxx from the AIM website, and no buddy icons showed again. I made sure all the settings were correct to ensure that they would show, but nothing came up.
I thought maybe it was my screenname, but I signed in on my roommate’s computer and the icons showed up there. So I uninstalled that aim and installed the same version as hers, 5.9.3861. It’s the same exact version, yet the icons still don’t show on this computer.
EDIT: I just tried 5.9.3747, since thats what my other friend is using and hers is working fine, and nothing happened, again. The install stopped for awhile at “imagehlp.dll” so maybe this might be the problem?
EDIT again: Now I’m back at 6.0.28.1. I tried logging in with another sn and the icons are loading fine on that name. When I log back on to my primary name, the people who I imed on name#2 show up, but no one else’s. Weird…
This laptop just got reformatted before it was given to me, so I don’t know what the problem would be. Any help you guys could give would be much appreciated!! thanks!!

MemberAnd in 6.0, have you gone into settings>expressions and set the radio button to “all buddy icons” and a checkmark beside “display superbuddy icons”?

MemberYeah, I did. I ended up just making a new screenname and everything was fine. I’m kinda down about it, I was really attached to it, but nothing I did could fix the problem. My friend said that sometimes aim things just stop working, I’ve had the screenname since 2002, so I guess maybe it just glitched when it came to buddy icons?

MemberI say give it a few days–or a week–and I’m sure it’ll work again. The AIM servers are very, very…weird…almost like they run off of NT4 or something really old and incompatible, that they have to struggle to maintain.
Give it some time, like a week and try again. Let me know how it turns out! 🙂

MemberSorry to revive such an old thread, but this is the EXACT problem I’m having as well. I tried signing on another screen name on the same computer and get the same thing. In 6.x or later, buddy icons won’t show up, nor will smilies. Just red x’s. The smilies will show a box with a red x as well as the characters that make up the smile. Also, if I go to the expressions webpage and choose an icon, it shows up fine there, but if I go back to settings and on the Expressions tab, it doesn’t show there. If I browse and select one from my computer, it will show in settings and the IM window, but not on the webpage. If I hover over a name on my Buddy List, same thing, nothing but the grey box with the grey sillohette. If I use 5.9 everything works fine. I’d like to be able to use the new version however, so I can use the grouped IM’s. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Oh, it’s been doing this for about a month now, so I guess the waiting a week or so thing won’t help. 🙁
