I had to laugh.
I dont know how many times I heard my teachers complaining, or bringing up to the class that someone, or some people are using internet slang words, like spelling ‘you’ with just ‘u’ or ‘people’ like ‘ppl’. I think its getting out of hand, but personally can stop my self before Id go too far with short cases.November 25, 2003 at 8:28 pm #88091MartinBradleyMemberWell basically, I have heard a story of someone who wrote a whole English essay in slang language, using words like “Ur” and “2moro” for example. However I think this is one very extreme case. I use instant messenging all the time, and I dont feel that it has affected my spelling and grammer. Take my recent GCSE results for example, English Language – B, and English Literature – B. I still use instant messenging a lot, and I am now studying English Language at ‘A’ Level. I think that although there is maybe a relationship between using instant messengers and poor spelling and grammer, that this relationship has been greatly over-exaggerated by teachers and other theorists.

November 25, 2003 at 9:43 pm #88088detn8rParticipantWell, I’ll agree with that. If my teacher is teaching a lesson, and we we need to jot things down etc, I’ll use the slag, as its a faster way, I’ll agree with that. But its the essays, and assignments, and even fill in the blanks that kill some people. My one friend back 4 years ago (grade 8) was using them in her speach she had to write, and didnt even realize she was doing it.
I look more at IM, as a typing teacher personally. I’d probably still be a one-finger typer if it wasnt for IM.
November 25, 2003 at 11:00 pm #88093WolfriderMemberMy spelling isn’t great, and I think I’m just so used to spellcheck’s and whatnot catching mistakes that I make them frequently in other assignments.
I’ve never referred to the 1337ness of any of my essay topics though so I think I’m in the safe-zone.
November 26, 2003 at 7:18 am #88092TigerbladeParticipantyeah i rip on a friend of mine (who’s a junior in college this year) for using “u” instead of “you” etc etc… sure we all use shortcuts, you’ll notice i’ve just abandoned capitals altogether and most punctuation is out the window, but geez. you cant write like that when it comes to assignments. she turns in writing assignments (poetry, essays…) using IM slang constantly. and the fact that she cant spell just makes it worse… *shakes head*
kids these days, i tell ya
November 26, 2003 at 11:24 pm #88094WolfriderMemberOh god… I used that phrase the other day. *Cries*
January 30, 2004 at 7:07 pm #88096AMH-UKParticipantTo be honest, I never use “u” or “2morrow” etc. ‘Cos It drives me up the wall! I always take the piss out of my friends spelling-which is dreadful; IM is making is spelling and punctuation practically unreadable (for me)! Especially when he wants me to read his work – for spelling and punctuation.
February 20, 2004 at 2:17 am #88090SathallrinMemberI don’t bother to use IM slang even on IM, because it is just as easy for me to type out the words, I type at the same speed whether I use slang or not. The one thing I do use though is the word “cuz” instead of because, I’ve recently noticed that I do this and I’ve been trying to break the habbit, and it is slowly getting there.
