Hiya, just wondered…
IF you always clear history, delete internet files, delete temp files cache etc etc etc
Apparantly our company has said they are going to look at what sites we are all lookin at.
We log in thru win 95, with password etc.
and it gets routed thru some IP or somethin, but can they really check?
June 13, 2003 at 3:19 pm #95035Jeff HesterKeymasterYes, you absolutely can, and short of using a co-worker’s computer and login, there’s nothing you can do about it!
Clearing your history and your cache is too late. The way that they watch is with monitoring software on a proxy server, so can monitor all Internet activity (web browsing, FTP, chat) in real time. If they want, they can lock down certain functionality, or block certain sites. Or they can generate an alert to the sysadmin whenever someone attempts to access something that they shouldn’t.
The bottom line? Don’t go anywhere on the net or do anything online that you’d be embarrassed to explain.
June 13, 2003 at 3:26 pm #95037FLiPNFiLLMemberTrue, although I’ve heard here in England theres a law coming out that you cannot monitor staff like that as its a somewhat invasion of privacy and quite sue-able lol.
I mean, if someone was staring at you all day youd complain…?

best to check your employee manual……
the company owns the computers, pays for the accesss….. and you have ZERO right to privacy if the manual or handbook states business purposes only……
they may have a program that sends screen captures of what you view and do to a computer off site…… it may mirror or keylog everything you do….. and clear history maybe worthless……there is ZERO expectation of privacy on your employers computers……
they are the ones held responsible if you mess up….. and who are at risk if you access an infected file or site….. compromising the BUSINESS files….ASK YOUR BOSS NOW!~
and if there is NO policy in place…. offer to help organize the policy….. or you may find ZERO access……….June 15, 2003 at 5:48 am #95038NhyrvanaMemberoh… and there are programs to RESTORE deleted files…. and to access certain files on the computer that retain the surfed links even when history is cleared……

The government have rights to unencrypt encrypted data travelling over the net, this is in order to catch software piracy and pornographers and paedophilia.
Your employer is not allowed to read your e-mail or look at what you are doing, without you first being told this is the case, and an explanation as to why this is the case. Yes, this law is coming soon. The guidelines are available in a paper called “Employment Practices Data Protection Code – Monitoring at Work” released(3rd part) on the 11th June 2003. Your employer must have good legal reasons to to use the above, and only in the most exceptional cases can they monitor you without your knowledge.
As for what they can monitor, like Jeff said everything that goes over the network, as they will use network software to monitor every single thing you do.
I am not aware on the US law for this, but at a guess I would say its legal for you to be spied upon, as data protection is much weaker than over here.
Data held in the UK is not allowed to be exported to the US because under the “data protection act 1998”, you are not permitted to export data to a place with weaker protection. This is because of your freedom to access data.

June 24, 2003 at 1:57 am #95036gaz_berottenMemberThe best way is to visit fake sites like http://www.i-know-your-watching-me.com or your-program-aint-monitoring-right.net or to really worrie them type this nito the address bar http://www.program-has-failed-please-contact-the-program-vender.-co.-uk. They check the address of websites right. They see that they probably think something went wrong on their end. I have tricked many techincitons with things like these. try it its a laugh get your mates to do it on other machines to

July 15, 2003 at 4:46 pm #95040JohnsonMemberI just read an article the other day, about emails in the work place are getting people fired, not sure but their was a descent % of companies who have fired people for sending emails that were viewed as being sexually harrasing. They seem like emails I used to get all the time from a buddy of mine, theres a lot of people who are always sending you humorous emails, and if u forward it to someone at work you could lose your job over it. I think this is very sad, people need to lighten up. If you have a problem with someone over some joke, you should let them know, not get them fired, people sit around an wonder why theres a lot of people who get fired and come back an go on a killing spree.
