I don’t know if my issues qualify under this one but the thing is when someone adds me I don’t get no pop up anymore to notify me. When I add them myself they go on my list but always show as the full email and when I try and talk to them it keeps saying they’re not in my contact list *shrug*
I’ve tried doing the “click here to add them to contact list” thing but it makes no difference.
I’ve now done both things mentioned in post #1 & #2 in this thread and now I can’t sign in to WLM. It’s just been trying (without error msg’s) for the past 30 mins.
Help please?!
November 6, 2006 at 2:47 pm #153749princeGParticipantTry this, it might solve the problem of signing in:
Try the following:
1. Click on Start and Run and type in REGEDIT and hit Enter
2. In the registry editor, click on “HKEY_CURRENT_USER”, followed by “Software”, followed by “Microsoft”, followed by “MSNMessenger”, and followed by “Policies”.
3. Delete the “Policies” folder.
4. Restart your machine.
5. Sign into Messenger again.
November 6, 2006 at 3:13 pm #153759Jeff HesterKeymasterw00t that worked. Thanks so much.

December 2, 2006 at 9:19 pm #153766The SheMemberoh, BLESS YOU!!!!
I’ve had this problem for some time now and I didn’t know what to do to solve it..
thanks both of you, the one who asked and the one who answered :]
have a great week, everybody!(the first suggestion worked for me, by the way)
December 26, 2006 at 9:27 pm #153767NiyMemberneither of the solutions worked for me
March 14, 2007 at 4:41 pm #153742imported_EvilSephMemberA thread pertaining to this one’s content has already been posted by detn8r.
Therefore, I have unstickied this one.
June 26, 2007 at 9:35 pm #153768KookalaMemberThe Second solution worked for me. Untill I restarted messenger that is. Then it would put the shared key back in and the problem would be there. So i had to set permissions on the communications client above the shared key to deny on all users. That fixed the problem.
November 15, 2007 at 1:44 pm #153769corel22MemberI tried removing the shared file, but it just deleted my msn and i had to download msn all over again please help!
August 8, 2008 at 7:12 pm #153770qualiaMemberAfter following the advice on here to delete the Contacts Cache folders, I am unable to log into Windows Live Messenger. Since then I frequently receive error number 80072efd. Occasionally, I instead receive error number 81000378. I understand this is due to Windows Live Messenger having difficulty retrieving my contacts information from the Windows Live servers.
I am not running a firewall and have switched my antivirus software off. I am not running my internet through a router or LAN. I have tried flushing the DNS cache and deleting my handshaking policy cache (HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsLiveCommunications ClientShared). I have tried fully uninstalling and reinstalling WLM and have tried all of the suggestions in Windows Live Help including registering the appropriate DLL files. I’ve checked the HOSTS file and it has nothing in except the default “127.0.0.1 localhost” entry
The Web Messenger works fine, I can connect to Windows update and use MSN Messenger 7.0. So there is nothing wrong with my PC or my connection. Can anyone help at all? I’ve been trying to log in for about 7 hours now and Microsoft’s support are pathetic (I’ve emailed twice… No response).
Thanks in advance…
August 9, 2008 at 9:56 pm #153771qualiaMemberThe problem was resolved eventually (18 hours later). I logged onto WLM at 3am yesterday and it connected fine. I guess the issue was that my client couldn’t communicate with the WLM servers to retrieve my contacts information due to heavy traffic or a fault at their end. So, if you’ve tried everything and are at your wits end, try logging in again at an ungodly hour and you might just make it. They really need to do something about that considering how many businesses etc rely on WLM/MSN.
Oh, and their tech staff did respond and were very polite (but seemingly didn’t read my email properly because they told me to try all of the same things I’d already tried numerous times). I suppose they’re just doing their job, though I wonder if any of them would love to admit it’s Microsoft’s shoddy system rather than the users fault half of the time if they could get away with it…
August 10, 2008 at 5:30 pm #153761Doris KenneyParticipantI’m glad to hear your problem is resolved. There are so many people hitting the servers at any given time, I guess the liklihood of at least a few having troubles at any given time is high. I know how frustrating it is! Sometimes once you’ve tried the standard “fixes” all you can do is wait.
Either way – at least you are ok and running well again.
August 16, 2008 at 2:31 am #153737Jeff HesterKeymasterI tried the suggestion in your first post and now I can’t log on to my Windows Live account… *sweatdrop*

i think i messed up because i probably deleted something in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
and now Windows live messanger wont startDecember 21, 2008 at 3:12 pm #153762Doris KenneyParticipantWhenever you play with registry entries, it’s always advisable to make a backup before you start so you can restore the registry if necessary. If something is messed up, be thankful it’s not more serious than just WLM.
I’d suggest going to Add/Remove programs, uninstall WLM and try a fresh install. If that doesn’t work, use the Windows Cleanup Utility to fully remove WLM, then try a fresh install.
Let me know if this helps.
