i just moved back to school, and now i can’t connect to IRC networks anymore (BBB included – its the only one i use anyway). i’ve attached two pictures to show what i’m seeing…
irc_1 shows the message i get in the irc status window… “socket is not connected” ?? irc_2 shows the “Firewall and IP” config window, i’m not sure if i need to change something in there to allow me to connect? i checked Windows Firewall, and it should be allowing BersIRC to connect, so i dont think that’s the problem. what i’m thinking is that its just something with my school network, since i could connect fine at home, but i have no idea how i can fix that or get around it, if at all. any suggestions?

I know that doesn’t fix your problem, I’m just curious. It sounds like the school may have a proxy that you need to configure before it will work properly.
January 19, 2005 at 2:22 am #112283TigerbladeParticipantyeah, that’s the thing. i’ve tried BersIRC, i’ve tried Trillian, i’ve tried the java client. nothing, nada. none of them work.
January 19, 2005 at 6:41 am #112281Jeff HesterKeymasterAre you accessing the internet on campus? Most campuses have instructions for configuring your computer to access common services such as FTP, instant messaging and IRC. I’d start there.
Another possibility would be to ask around. Chances are good that there are MANY other IRC users on campus. How are they getting connected?
January 19, 2005 at 11:12 pm #112284TigerbladeParticipantwell, i called the network administrators and the techs… etc… turns out the network here doesn’t support connecting to IRC networks. “our security settings are set pretty high.” so…. i guess i wont be connecting to the server for a few months. 🙁 oh well. i think i’m gonna call them back in the morning and complain that it should be no different than any other chat client. there’s no one complaining that their AIM doesnt work, now is there??
