MemberI have a user in my office who uses his personal laptop for work. He connects to the net at home via an AOL DSL connection. He can connect with the Windows Live Messenger 8.0 at home just fine, but when he tries to connect in the office, it takes a while, up to 5 mins for messenger to appear on screen. When he attempts to log in, messenger may take anywhere from 10 minutes to all day before it finally connects. No actual error messages are displayed. We use an ethernet LAN in the office, with bell sympatico DSL. No other user has issues with messenger so I suspect there’s a problem with one or more settings on this user’s laptop. I have recently cleaned out all spy/adware/viruses from his machine. I have also tried uninstalling and re-installing MSN. I was wondering if anyone had any possible solutions?

ParticipantThere is definitely something clogging the connection. Are other co workers connecting through your company’s supplied PC’s or their on laptops as well? If they are on a PC are you using a networking software such as Novell?
Also, is your co worker using the same laptop at home under AOL as he is with Bell at work? I personally do not use broadband (Sympatico dial user myself) but perhaps someone else can confirm that settings need to be altered between services?
Also, does the user have a firewall (supplied by Windows or Sympatico or other wise)?

MemberThis is the only user with a privately owned computer on the network, everyone else is using company supplied laptops or pcs. We aren’t using novell or any other similiar software. The network is a mix of windows xp and windows 2k boxes. He is using the same computer at home on AOL broadband as when he plugs into our LAN. I specifically disabled his windows firewall briefly to see if it was related to the problem, but that had no effect. He is not running any additional firewall software. Strangley while windows live messenger displays the symptoms I described above, the basic Windows messenger that comes built into Windows xp works fine, and logs in instantly.

Memberhi Wheelz,
Try downloading this little program, DrTCP, Google it or get it from broadband help » DrTCP by Broadbandreports.com Set the `MaxMTU` value to 1400, save it, then try to sign in. Something to do with PPPoE is effecting his ability to connect ( i think, lol ) ….. It may work it may not, but its worth a shot …..
Good luck
