MemberThis just started like 2 weeks ago.
Whenever I click the direct connect button and click Connect.. nothing happens. Then when the other person tries to connect it says “The connection could not be established because an error occurred. (Note: For best results, you and your buddy should use the latest version of AIM.). ” Then I have to sign off.. Then I usually cant connect back on AIM so I have to restart. But I can visit websites and everything. The AIM port (5190) is open on my router and I dont see why this is happening. It only disconnects AIM.. everything else works.
Any suggestions?

MemberAIM’s Direct Connect feature is often very fussy and choses to only work with certain buddies. For example, if 02 buddies are behind routers (which have hardware firewalls), the Direct Connect feature will often take some tinkering for any degree of usability. Make sure that you’ve upgraded to the latest version of AIM (and, preferably, ensure that the buddy you want to connect with has done the same).

AIM sucks. Deal with it.
Here’s another answer that you should consider:

MemberYeup..AIM upgrades (particularly 5.9) often come with all kinds of baggage and junk features that no one wants, but if you want the functionality of worthwhile features (like Direct Connections and smooth file transfers), you’ve got to bite the bullet and upgrade when new releases become availible.

MemberNo you don’t understand. It’s not my AIM connection I dont think. When I click Connect, the box goes away like I didnt even click it. And when someone trys to connect to me I dont even get the Accept dialog box. I’ve tried 5.9 and it does the same thing and I like 5.5 so im sticking with it. Don’t ask me to upgrade anymore because I won’t do it. lol. Anyone else have a possible solution?

ParticipantTrying going into preference –> Direct IM –> click on firewall –> choose the second option “outgoing..”. Tell your friend to do it to and it might work.
And make sure you’re not on a proxy.. to check, go preference –> sign on/off –> click on connection –> check to see if the proxy check box is checked, if it is uncheck it AND restart AIM.
