MemberI have a SMC7004ABR Cable/DSL (i have cable) Router and would like to get direct connection, image and file transfers to work. Has anyone achieved this using an SMC router? I’m beginning to with I had a linksys. I’ve tried using both “special applications” and “virtual server” in the admin tools, forewarding port 4443 (the DC port), and can’t get it to work. I must be doing something wrong, if you have any suggestions let me know! Thanks!

KeymasterFirst, test by bypassing the router and connecting directly to your cable modem. Make sure it works there first, then you’ll know the problem lies with the router configuration.
Who makes the SMC…???

MemberIt worked fine before I got the router. The problem is caused because of the NAT firewall/ip-masking that the firewall uses, I just don’t know how to foreward the ports. The router is made by the company SMC (http://www.smc.com). Thanks!

KeymasterI’m not specifically familiar with SMC routers, but looking at their site, it appears that you need to setup what they call a port “triggers” for these features. I found related information for other IM programs (MSN, ICQ) but not AIM.
AIM uses port 5190, so you might try setting up a trigger for that (both TCP and UDP).

MemberThanks for the help, but I still havn’t gotten it. Here’s some info from the router’s help page:
Some applications require multiple connections, such as Internet gaming, video conferencing, Internet telephony and others. These applications cannot work when Network Address Translation (NAT) is enabled. If you need to run applications that require multiple connections,-specify the port normally associated with an application in the “Trigger Port” field, select the protocol type as TCP or UDP, then enter the public ports associated with the trigger port to open them for inbound traffic.
So what do I put in the public ports field and how do I set AIM up with that? Is this even what I’m looking for? Thank you so much!

KeymasterI’m going to suggest you check out the hardware section of Broadband Reports. They have extensive coverage specific to various hardware manufacturers. From their home page, go to Forums > All Forums > Hardware by Brand > SMC. I did a quick search there and found this topic that might be of some help. That site is great for hardware and router configuration issues.
