MemberOk my friend got there cell phone taking up during 3rd period and the number was my cell phone number. Well now everyone is blaming me that it was me and well her phone should have been off and not turned on on normal ring though. But, it wasn’t me and now she like hates me. I even have witnesses that I never left class during 3rd period and that I couldn’t have done it. But, they think I have since my number came up on the phone when whoever called her called her. Well people know it wasn’t me too. Well so they think I am like doing some kind of stalking thing. I am just wondering how could this happen. Because it was not me that called her but her cell phone says it was. I even have people that sit around me know it wasn’t me.

MemberIt simply CANNOT say it was you if it was not you. Perhaps you had her number on speed dial and it knocked something in your pocket and called her. Cellphones don’t belong in the classroom…leave them in lockers or at home and that would never happen.

Most people don’t have a locker, so they just carry their phone in their pocket. However, even if that is the case, Rusty’s friend still should have had the phone on silent or compeletely off. Rusty, why is your friend mad at you when it is actually his/her fault for having their phone on?

Membermy friend has nextel, a motorola i-360 i believe…and when i call him from my calling card (when my cell is dead of course) it shows up that the caller is someone named damon. of course, i’m not damon, and the number should come up, wherever the phone card was made..the number usually shows up. so i dunno.
don’t make a big deal about it. who cares..

MemberDid they give you their phone number? If they did I don’t see how that is stalking. Did they let you see your number on their phone in the incoming call log? If not, do you trust them enough to believe them when they say it was your number? I think it is unlikely to be a bug in the phone system. You should check your phone’s outgoing call log just in case to make sure the number wasn’t dialed by accident.
I agree with Oreo that this woundn’t have happened if the phones were left in lockers or at least always off during school hours.
And as a general question to all of those that have there phones on during school. What is so important that you need your phone on while in class?

Yes, its true now-a-days most teachers have cell phones too, but out of personal safety, each person feels they should have one close by just in case. And as for having it on, if an emergency arose, you would be alerted, since if it was off, you wouldn’t know who called unless they left a voice message. They should definately be silent, but not off.

And as for having it on, if an emergency arose, you would be alerted, since if it was off, you wouldn’t know who called unless they left a voice message. They should definately be silent, but not off...right…firstly the columbine massacre, to me, is a silly reason to have to bring your cell phone to school. Sure, it might have that small point, but it is thin. And really, if it is only in case of emergencys like that, then why is it that it is deemed so much a distraction in the class room? Because people are feckign stupid enough to actually call it. Sure, ok, fine, a call for help, then there should be a way to make it purely outgoing and no incoming calls, or perhaps the idea behind having a phone in every classroom is enough. If you hear gunshots next door or down the hall, you’re going to have at least 5 rooms call the emergency out.
Also, as to your point in having it on…if a family emergency arose where a child would need to be contacted, the office is where the call should go to. The parents call the office, the office makes an announcement during passing time or calls your room or sends someone down there to get you. At which time you go and use one of the many phones in the building. That way, you do not disrupt your class. And even lets say it was on vibrate and you excused yourself from the room to answer it. If you have a particularly dicky teacher who doesn’t trust you, who’s to say it was an emergency? And even then you would have to notify them that you were leaving and then notify the office, all of that, who would have to in turn recall whoever had called you…really it’s a run around. It cuts out so much of the hassle if the office is notified first, they send someone down to get you. Then the teacher is aware, the teacher believes you, the office knows what’s going on and you are removed without consequence.
I see little to no reason why cell phones should be anywhere with a child when in class. The only reason they should even be in the school building is if the child has after school activities and needs to phone someone for a ride home, in which case, once more, the school’s phones more than suffice.
Of course, this is high school I’m talking. College you have a sort of respectful right to do as you please but do so in a manner that does not disturb your class. The professor doesn’t give a flying fireman if you leave in the middle of class. High school teachers, 90% of their job is babysitting.

MemberRabidKitten, it’s like you read my mind. I’m glad you wrote it since I’m a horrible writer.
When I was in high school I only used my cell phone to call home for a ride when
I was on the rifle team, since it was a long distance call.Maybe someday schools will use some sort of jamming device?

MemberRusty, if your friend wants to give up their friendship for something so stupid like this, and they don’t trust you enough to believe you and think your stalking them or whatever, then they’re not a really good friend in the first place are they. If you keep trying to create convers with the person, they’ll just accuse you of stalking more. Just forget about the sorry looser. You don’t need people like that in your life.

ParticipantHere here, Grant.
And Ithaca, yeah, who knows…not likely here though. My former high school was actually paid to put a cell phone…what is it…receiver…pole…thingy (whatever) in the stadium. And seeing how the school is in desperate need of funds, they did it. Oy vey.

MemberThey gave me there number personally and like I didn’t see it on the caller id but like they took the problem to the principal he has there phone since it rang and my other friend has Sprint PCS his name is Eric and she called him and left a message and it came up as his other friends number. I think Sprint might have a bug. My phone works really really well the only thing is that it takes like 1 minute to turn on it says Welcome for like 30 seconds then it does this thing where the word Verizon there logo like does a spiral thing and comes out for 30 seconds. This is funny one kid in Social Studies got his phone taking up because it was beeping in and out of service see like everyone at school has Sprint I am like one of 10 people that have Verizon or Cingular. But I think you might should have them on during class. Mine was turned off that day though.

They are deemed a distraction simply because SOME students apparently don’t know how to use the silent features that comes with the phones. I personally never once called anyone during class time and only once answered when i had 20 missed calls from home, but even then i had teacher approval. Reason being my mom had tried to phone the school to alert me of a family emergency, but my high school made a big deal of not pulling us out for things like that. With me knowing was for me to be alerted to go pick up my brother after school and all. Not all high school’s believe in giving any type of message to a student, even if its “pick up your brother after-school.” You may say that’s what voice mail is for…….but back then on that old phone i had…Voice mail wasn’t one of the features i had access to, i didn’t know the password and the company wouldn’t give me a new one, no point in leaving me voice messages, cuz i never could hear them. Now-a-days, you are mainly right though, no use to have them in class, but when you have stict high schools like mine was, it becomes necessary to find other ways to be alerted. So for me it was on the basis of keep it on, but silent, and never answer or use it for personal calls. And as much as people try to prohibit them completely or try to force them to keep it off, you will always find some parent who is very attached to their child, who will fight against it, for whatever reason they can come up with or even make-up to use against the school, so i don’t see that happening any time soon. Everyone shouldn’t be punished for those people who don’t use the silent feature or that don’t follow the rules of no calling during class time…It ruins it for people who actually do follow…

MemberCell phones don’t belong in the classroom, just as Sam stated. Other than that, there are problems going on with text messaging. What if the teacher decides to give a test that day, and they see the cell phone on your lap? “Sorry, Mr. Smith, I’m just waiting for an emergency call, I swear I’m not text messaging.”
Right okay.
Rusty, leave your phone in your locker next time. Or in your bookbag, or car, whatever. Then stupid people won’t accuse you of things. It’s really simple.
