MemberThis was an awesome remake. Only Burton and Depp could of pulled it off. It was definitely made with respect of the old one.
Did anyone like it?

MemberIn short, no.
I think the original is a classic, and I was very skeptical about this film when I first heard about it. Anyway, just out of interest, I went to see it. I don’t think it did the original justice at all. Also, I’m not a Johnny Depp fan.

ParticipantIt wasn’t supposed to do the original movie justice, it was supposed to do the book justice, which the original movie completely screwed up.
Personally, I actually enjoyed it to a point. I wouldn’t go out and buy it…alright, I probably will, but only once it hits the discount racks. It has some great one liners, and one thing I simply adore about pretty much all of Burton’s films is that they’re all so incredibly…just…*sigh* they have that extra inch that makes them a Burton film.
All the scenes and props are so vibrant, the children, oh my gosh all of the characters except for the Bucket families are so bazaare looking, so fleshy and bright and shiny. They look as if someone turned up the contrast far too high and so vibrant, just to give them a skewed look from a nightmare. It’s in all the little details that I adore the film. Like this one, did anyone else notice the Agustus didn’t have any eyebrows? Like Whoopy Goldberg, it gives you a sense of something being just not right, but you don’t know why. It’s one of those things you notice, but don’t think about. All those details are marvellous.
The chocolate river was 120% better than the disgusting looking mass in the original, it had that obscure kind of nightmarish, darker feel that the book intended, it even added in some of Willy’s background history, which was a nice touch, I thought. Mr. Depp has such a great twist on all of his characters, I know people that aren’t fans of his, but love him when he’s in a Burton flick because he has the opportunity to be so atypical. He said that he got the character from the idea of child show hosts, captain kangaroo, Mr. Rodgers, you know, those folks. And if you look at his actions and how he speaks, you can definately see it in there.
I don’t know, I thought it was a really enjoyable movie if only for the details. He went out of his way to make it disturbing (the oopa loompas are proof of that much. Deep scares me), to make it grand (largest sets ever made, trained squirrels, hardly any special effects if he could help it) and to make it as true as he could to the book. Lovely.
Wonderfully done, Tim.

MemberI understand that the new movie is supposed to be based on the book. However, how is the book supposed to be “scary” when the author, Roald Dahl, is a children’s author? I remember reading James and the Giant Peach when I was like in 4th grade or something. I don’t remember it being scary. Or is the book supposed to kind of be like the Goosebumps series?

ParticipantIt’s not suposed to be ‘scary’, it’s supposed to be ‘dark’. There is a massive difference. The best way to explain it is just to say “read it and find out” because in all honesty, there are just some things you can’t explain in a work like that. Undertones, little inklings, things of that nature.

Participanti saw it the other night, and i was rather impressed, actually. it’s not the same as the original, but that was the point. each is great in its own rights. like RabidKitten said, it has some great one liners. the soundtrack was awesome from the first few seconds of the movie on.
i’ll probably end up buying it, but once it’s cheaper than the standard $20…July 30, 2005 at 3:51 am #126359Rusty
MemberDoes anyone know where to get all the images? People have on other forums there like photos from in the movie just wondering.

Participanthave you perhaps tried The Official Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Film Site? or you could try to make your own if you can find decent enough shots of it…

MemberWell, just saw the movie, and I must say I loved it. I didn’t like it, it wasn’t OK, it was amazing. RabidKitten was right, it does do the book justice, and I love how much more they explored the mystery of Willy Wonka’s character. I will definately get my hands on this movie somehow when it comes out, it’s definately one I will re-watch.

Memberhey i’m a little late. just rented the movie. it was a good movie. kinda scary actually, but it was easy to follow along with. i’ve never read roald dahl’s book, so i couldn’t tell you if it was close or not.
i did notice some differences. in the willy wonka movie, charlie’s dad was not a part of the family. and neither was veruca salt’s mom. i believe that through the tour of the factory, violet’s father came with her, not her mom, and the same with mike teevee. mike’s mother came, but not his dad.
good movie though.

MemberI know there hasn’t been a post in this thread for a while but I just wanted to say how much I love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It’s a great movie, I reckon it’s a lot better than the original. This films follows the book more than the other. Johnny Depp did a great job as Willy Wonka. I have this film on DVD and love watching it. Freddy Highmore is a very talented young man. I hope I see more of him in the future. It’s also a very humorous film, I love it! :woot:
