Chat Delay

me and my friend seem to be on a time delay, well, he gets my messages sometimes like 4 mins after I actually send them. latley hes been getting this message:

my buddy: The connection with new yorker was not successful. Make sure that your Buddy is using the latest version of AIM. Changing your settings in the Firewall preference may help. Also both you and your Buddy may need to adjust the settings of the firewall software on your individual networks.

We both have Windows XP, Service Pack 2, and the final AIM 5.5
Anyone know what is wrong, or what we can do to change it?
