Ever wanted to talk directly to the folks responsible for your favorite instant messenger? If that IM program happens to be Yahoo! Messenger, you are in luck. This coming Monday, October 6, 2008 Yahoo staff members will be conducting a live, online workshop to answer your questions about the recently released Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.
The free, online workshop begins at 3pm Pacific time (time zone converter). To join, just visit this link at the appropriate time on Monday.
Be sure to say “hi” from BigBlueBall!
October 6, 2008 at 11:08 pm #171479FanaticMemberFor anyone who didn’t or couldn’t attend, I snagged a copy of the workshop transcript. I see Dermot was in there!
YahooMod: Hi all!
YahooMod: Thanks so much for joining us for the 9.0 Messenger Workshop! This Workshop will focus primarily on the latest addition to the Messenger family: 9.0.
YahooMod: Feel free to submit questions using the box below. We’ll do our best to get to as many of your questions as possible in the hour allotted.
YahooMod: If you’re joining late, or miss any of the conversation, feel free to click on the “transcript” button at the top of the window to view the full conversation.
YahooMod: We’ll get started in just a minute!
YahooMod: Ok, let’s get started!
winston_price_jde: How can I search my archived messages?
YMessengerMelissa: We don’t currently offer a search function when viewing your archives. To look at your complete archives in 9.0, go to the Contacts menu and choose “Message Archive”
Edward947: Will both sizes of emoticons be available? The larger size was available in the 9.0 beta.
JoeSmiley: Hi Edward947, unfortunately, no. The smaller emoticons are back by popular demand as most users preferred them over the larger smileys.
browneyes3334: I am wondering are you gonna put back the delete feature on the offline messages and the new messenger still as a little bugs in it.
YMessengerJohn: Any messages you report as spam are automatically not included in the archive, so there’s no need for a delete button.
xirkilair28: how could i change my cell number in signing in to mobile device?
YMessengerMelissa: Go to Messenger>Preferences>General>Edit my mobile phone to update your phone preferences.
tosh: Before, I can turn off and on my Profiles, how can I do it on this new version (9.0)?
YMessengerJohn: Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to enable or disable individual profiles in Messenger. Sorry for the inconvenience!
G-329708917: 1)Is it possible to mark” a star” for an email that we think is important…this facility is available in GMAIL!?
YMailRyan: Yep! You can flag messages by clicking on the right-most column in New Mail to create a flag Additionally, in New Mail, you can also flag by right-clicking on the message and then selecting a flag. In the Classic version of Mail, it’s the far left column.
casper_fms: How can i change skins in yahoo messenger??
YMessengerMelissa: Easy! There’s a round dot at the top of your Messenger contact window– click this to reveal a dropdown menu of all the available skins.
wi_keyman: Will previous plugins be compatible with the new version?
YMessengerJohn: Yes, all previous plug-ins are compatible with the new version.
nhuser: Are there messaging archives available on 9.0?
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi nhuser,Yes, version 9.0 offers archiving capabilities. First, you need to make sure that archiving is turned on. Go into the Messenger menu and click on “Preferences”. Then click on ‘Archive’ on the left hand side. Choose one of the two top options in the list and then click the “OK” button at the bottom.
MessengerBlogSarah: To view an archive, you can click the “Show Recent Messages” link in the IM window when you’re talking to a friend, or go to the Contacts menu in the main window and select “Message Archive”.
moondawg2000: I have tried to install Messenger 9.0 several times and it stops at 99 percent installed. I have completely removed prior versions of messenger and still have no success. I have aslo used taskmanager to halt unnecessary programs from running in the background still not success. I searched for solutions on your website and there is nothing there but what I tried already.
YMessengerJohn: Please try downloading the client from this link: http://download.yahoo.com/dl/msgr9/us/ymsgr9us.exe
G-342515971: I want to show a Gif image as a actual gif.. could yahoo make this feature possible?
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi G-342515971, We know users like this feature and that it’s available in Windows Live Messenger. It’s something we’re considering so maybe it will make it into a future version. Thanks for the suggestion
b1o0d: ok are you guys gonna make any new poweruser icons ? that can tell what sex you are by having it next to yo ID on someones messy list
YMessengerMelissa: Great suggestion! Currently we only offer the Power User icons you’re familiar with, but will look into offering more sometime in the future!

MessengerBlogSarah: Hi listservlady – Yes, it is possible to have different stealth settings for different groups. To set stealth for a particular group, RIGHT click on the group name in your contact list, then select “Stealth Settings” and choose the setting you’d like.
tncandle: I have downloaded and deleted and re-downloaded my messenger and My Yahoo Music Launchcast is still not working properly, it will not let me change my radio stations i want. Can someone help me?
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi tncandle, We’ve had a lot of questions submitted to the workshop about LAUNCHcast issues (especially the one you’re describing). We’re aware there’s some kind of bug with it since we launched and we’re looking into it. Stay tuned to the blog for more info in the coming days. Thanks for your patience.
wi_keyman: What are the new hidden emoticons (if any)?
YMessengerMelissa: You can find a complete list of the hidden emoticons by going here: Hidden Emoticons – Yahoo! Messenger
mikedeanellis: how can we get rid of the “crown” by our name in messenger list? Or can we change it from crown to something else?
YMessengerMazi: Hi Mike, Thanks for being a Power User! You can change your crown and show off your Power User status with 3 other designs or remove it by visiting the Power User Page at the link below
YMessengerMazi: Yahoo! Messenger – Chat, Instant message, SMS, PC Calls and More
YMessengerMazi: If you ever want to change it again, you can always click on your display image and access the page through “Power User Benefits” link
nribeka: what is the different between messenger 9.0 and messenger for vista?
MessengerBlogSarah: 9.0 is our latest client and contains the most features. Yahoo! Messenger for Vista is still in Beta and does not offer all of the “core” Messenger features yet such as webcam and chat rooms. So if you’re on Windows Vista and want the FULL Yahoo! Messenger experience, you should download and install Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, available here: Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 – Chat, Instant message, SMS, PC Calls and More. This blog post also has more help on understanding which version has which features: Yahoo! Messenger Blog » Understanding what version has which features
angaryone: how can i recieve a pc to pc call
dawn2210: Can you make a version of this for windows 98 please
YMessengerMelissa: Unfortunately, we can’t support Windows 98 as the last couple versions of Messenger use technologies that aren’t available on 98. However, you can still communicate with your Yahoo! Messenger friends by logging into web-messenger (Yahoo! Messenger for the Web) or chatting through the All-New Yahoo! Mail.
YMessengerMelissa: angaryone, To do this, start a conversation with your contact and then click on the “Call” icon in the top left corner of your IM window.
matthew300ex: are there emoticons that make noise
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi matthew300ex – We have audibles in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 which are little characters that made noises.
MessengerBlogSarah: To use Audibles in an IM conversation, click on the icon that has a mouth on it that sits above the text box where you type in your message. Tha will open up the Audibles menu (be sure to look for the “More Audibles” button on the right side of the menu to access all the Audibles). There are many different kinds of Audibles, including a set of Emoticon audibles.
thedogpackofyappers: When you download messenger 9.0 do you just leave old version open. And will all your contacts with message archives be transferred or saved.
YMessengerMazi: Hi thedogpackofyapper! Yes, when you upgrade your client all of your contacts will be migrated over to the new version! Your archive is also carried over as long as you don’t uninstall your old version of Messenger before upgrading to the the new version. You can also manually copy your archive folder by going to: C:Program FilesYahoo!MessengerProfiles\Archive before you uninstall.
shannonzeecannon: why we cannot IM from the friends list, why do we have to use the drop down menu from the top, and then choose IM a contact from there. When i mouse over a contact, options of sms message, and options to call them comes up – but not just IM, and if i click on their avatar, it just brings up their stats and details little window, but no IM. This is the 3rd time i have submitted this q? – what’s the deal?
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi shannonzeecannon – To start an IM right from your contact list, hover your mouse on the friend and DOUBLE click to start an IM message.
MessengerBlogSarah: You can also use the contact list search box to type in a contact and when they come up in the results below, double click on their name to start an IM.
G-339268656: Is there any way to make my messenger shows status other than Online, Busy, and Appear Offline? (Aside from using the Personal Message)
YMessengerMelissa: Yep! To update your status to “busy,” click on the yellow dot next to your name in your contact list. This will give you a dropdown menu, allowing you to select, “Available,” “Busy,” or “Invisible.” You can also type a status message by clicking the field below your name. You can even share a link to a website in the status.
YahooMod: Hey guys, we’re a little more than halfway through! Be sure to submit your questions now, for review by the Messenger Team!
ninarv: How do I send group IM’s? I have been unable to do this with the new messenger. Thank you.
YMessengerJohn: To send a message to a group, right-click the group name and select Broadcast an IM to this Group. Or, you can select several contacts, right-click one and select Send an Instant Message.
carl27ga: Is there anything in v9 to help with the incessant problem of getting unrequested messages from mechanicals (Bots) advertising pornography sites? This is more than a little offensive.
JoeSmiley: You can ignore instant messages from anyone who’s not on your Messenger List by going to Preferences > Ignore List and selecting “Ignore anyone who is not on my Messenger List”
kkralp: i bought windows vista not knowing that u cant use webcams or use the the sweet im, so i am asking u to please update this today thanks
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi kkralp,You can use a webcam with Yahoo! Messenger, but you need to use the 9.0 version. The Vista version of Messenger does not support webcam, but our latest 9.0 does (and it works on Vista). So go and download Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 at Download – Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 if you want to be able to use a webcam. Thanks
laotseh: Question 3: I didn’t recieve any welcoming email from yahoo for becoming a power user, i find it out from my friends who have me on their list in yahoo messenger. is it right?
YMessengerMazi: Hello laotseh, you may have chosen not to receive emails from Yahoo! However, if you’re a Power User, you would receive a notification in Y! Messenger 9.0.
YMessengerMazi: To make sure that you have the latest info about Power Users, access the Power User benefits page by clicking on your display image to see your current benefits, and be sure to sign up for the All-star group to stay up-to-date with the latest perks.
Dermot: in the new Yahoo Messenger 9.0 full after you change skins you cannot put it back to default out of box colour, any reason why?
JoeSmiley: Hi Dermot, The default color is one of the options on the menu. It’s called “Purple.” Click on the red dot on the top right of Messenger to bring down the list and choose it from the drop-down.
G-339555512: why cant i view my budies webcam when it says view webcam under his name
YMessengerMazi: Check to make sure your contact has invited you to view their webcam. You may not be able to view their webcam if they have their settings set to “invite only.”
mldh: I would like my messenger to be on the left side of screen instead of right.
YMessengerMelissa: Mldh, that one’s easy! Just drag your contact window to the left side of the screen.
G-239415943: How do I u turn on a plugin in yahoo messenger? How do I turn on yahoo r
JoeSmiley: After you login to messenger, above the advertisement and next to the add contact button you will see plug-ins. Click the arrow. You should see add plug-ins. Click button and that should pop plug-in manager. Start the one you want.
YahooMod: Just a reminder, if you’re joining late, you can catch up on the conversation by clicking on the “transcript” button in the top portion of the screen.
Yulka: Why there is no version of the messenger in russian?
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi Yulka – With each new release, we try to add more language options for our users. While we don’t have a definitive date for a Russian version, stay tuned to the blog or our website for news.
buttercreeme: Does anyone know why suddenly Yahoo Messenger 9.0.0.1389 Beta has become so “unstable” that links i.e to e-mail, wont work and if you click on a link the whole thing goes instantly “poof” and is gone?
YMessengerMelissa: Hi buttercreeme, be sure to download the latest version of 9.0 at Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 – Chat, Instant message, SMS, PC Calls and More, as it is no longer in beta. This should help with the issues you’re experiencing.
mimip2000: Why aren’t I able to listen to my voicemail from yahoo messenger like I used to in the older version? It says something like “voicemail was delivered to” my email address…but I don’t see it.
YMessengerMazi: You can send voice mails you receive to any email account you choose. Open Contacts > Call History, then click Set Up Voicemail. Add the email address you want to use and click OK. Voice messages will then be sent to that account as MP3 attachments.
connclark698: What kind of special features will be added to 9.0
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi Connclark, Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 is already available, so you should download it and see for yourself. 😉 Some of the great new features in it include inline video and picture viewing, new emoticons (inspired by our users), new skins, a new wizard to help you find and add more friends to your list, as well as the return of Yahoo! Games to your IM window. Read more about it here:

rula: how can i delete my calls history?
JoeSmiley: Hi rula – It is not possible to delete your Yahoo! Messenger call history.
arm888: Will there be an upgraded version for the Blackberry (not Yahoo Mobile) so I can receive Pingbox chats from my website?
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi arm888 – Unfortunately, we do not plan to offer Pingbox receiving support in our mobile versions. So if you’re logged on via a mobile version, such as Blackberry, your Pingbox will show you as offline and you will not be able to receive IM’s from your Pingbox.
MessengerBlogSarah: To appear available in your Pingbox and receive IMs from Pingbox visitors, you need to be signed into one of our desktop clients (Mac, Windows) or Yahoo! Messenger for the Web.
MichaelChapek: I was wondering, I think it’s part of the IM program, it would be a nice feature if when the mail notifier pops up in the right-hand bottom corner if a person could just delete it at that time by clicking a button on the mail notifier. Do you have any plans to do this in the future? Thank you.
YMessengerAnne: Hi Michael, If you are using Messenger 9.0, you should be able to delete mail as you are notified of its appearance in your inbox. Just right click and select delete. Thanks for the question. Anne
raphtettey: Hello everyone, I’m glad i get to be a part of this workshop. I really love the new yahoo with all its awesome features but my issue is with the new update. I have updated my ver.9 beta to the new ver.9 but anytime i start the programme and i try to either try clicking on the heelp button for any reason at all, it just stops working and i have to start yahoo messenger all over again and it still repeats. Is there anything thats making it act like that?
jtshea88: i had 9.0 and the webcam stuff would not work and i emailed u all about it over and over and then one day got a reply but they could not help or some crap and then i replyed to the person and it was something about mobile phones and so i gave up and gone back to the dang 8.0 X_X but i really love the 9 it was better i thought and all.. just wish u all would fix it or what ever and it WAS the latest one out at the time…
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi raphtettey – Sorry that you’re having those problems. I would try completely uninstalling Yahoo! Messenger from your computer and then returning to the Yahoo! Messenger site and re-downloading and installing 9.0. To uninstall Messenger, go to your Control Panels > Add/Remove Programs and find Yahoo! Messenger in the list. Once you’ve uninstalled, go to Yahoo! Messenger – Chat, Instant message, SMS, PC Calls and More to download 9.0 again.
JoeSmiley: If you’re experiencing webcam issues in 9.0, we recommend uninstalling your webcam software and then reinstalling the latest software from the webcam maker’s website. That can sometimes help.
krazytime74: Will you still be able to appear vicible to SELECTED friends on your list? In the Vista version you couldn’t do that.
MessengerBlogSarah: The new Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 does support stealth settings for individual friends. You can right click on a friend in your list and choose to appear offline to them. Similarly, you can right click on a group name and appear offline to the entire group if you choose.
YahooMod: There are only a few minutes left, so be sure to submit your questions now.
BlackBrigade: Will Yahoo! Instant Messenger ever create a Video chat application which lets you use your webcam and microphone at the same time, like on MSN messenger?
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi BlackBrigade. You can do this now in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0. Start by running your webcam with your friend. Then click the “Call” button in your IM window to start a free PC to PC call.
flowergodess: I cannot see mine, nor anyone elses pictures when im on messenger. I also cannot use any plugins. The error message simply states that the plug-in cannot be started. As for the picture problem, I already tried going through the help in messenger, and those attempts did not work. Thank you for any help you may be able to give me!! Flowergodess
YMessengerMelissa: Hi Flowergodess. Be sure you’re using the latest version of Mesesnger (you can download it here: Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 – Chat, Instant message, SMS, PC Calls and More) to see if this helps. If not, be sure to contact Customer Care as they’ll be able to walk you through your issue a bit better.
sebynho: the new mess 9.0 is the 8 with a new face…why didn’t you let 9 final different?like the beta version was..with larger avatar on the right side…
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi sebynho – There are two views in 9.0 for your contact list. Compact list and detailed list. The detailed list view shows larger display images for each friend on your list. To ensure you’re in the right view, click the button to the right of the contact search bar near the top of your Messenger window. Or go to the Messenger menu, choose Preferences and then click on “Appearance” and choose a setting under “Messenger List”
http: Can I add friends no matter what their email address is?
YMessengerMazi: Hi “http”, The easiest way to add friends to Messenger is to use our invitation center: http://messenger.yahoo.com/invite/
YMessengerMazi: When you use this invitation center, you can ADD friends who use Yahoo! Messenger directly to your Messenger list. Or, you can INVITE other users to Messenger. Once these friends accept your invitation, they will be added to your Messenger list.
liezl: how can i personalize my yahoo messenger?
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi Liezl – There are lots of ways but I’ll just list a few here to get you started. 🙂 Skins are one of the easiest ways to personalize. From the main Messenger 9.0 window, click on the dot next to the minimize/maximize/close buttons in the upper right corner. This will bring up the skin chooser menu – click on one to select it and change the look of your Messenger windows.
MessengerBlogSarah: When you’re in an IM conversation, you can also personalize your messages by changing the font color, size and type. Just click the “T” button above the message box to access those features.
MessengerBlogSarah: And lastly, you can add a display image or Avatar that will appear next to you in your friend’s IM windows. At the top of the Messenger window, click on the image to the left of your name, then click the ‘Display Image’ link on the card that pops out. Have fun!
jimrose64: Will there ever be any emoticons other than smileys.
YMessengerAnne: Hi Jim, You can already use non-smiley emoticons. Try using some hidden emoticons (including animals, aliens, and flags). You can find a list of hidden emoticons here: Hidden Emoticons – Yahoo! Messenger
YMessengerAnne: Also, you can try out “emoticat” emoticons by using the Emoticats IMV:
YMessengerAnne: Yahoo! Messenger – Chat, Instant message, SMS, PC Calls and More Thanks, Anne
mudajaya: i am using YM v.9, how to receive photo from mobile phone camera???
JoeSmiley: Have your buddy transfer their photos from mobile camera to the computer and then you both can use messenger version 9 to do photo sharing.
psychochick6977: how come i am unable to connect my cricket wireless cell to yahoo messanger you can with any other cell phone you should be able to use cricket to?????
JoeSmiley: This feature is only available for the carriers that we partner with. Unfortunately, if cricket is not one of the providers, you may not be able to connect to your cricket mobile.
mikedeanellis: If I clear my custom status message it refers back to an old status instead of blank
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi mikedeanellis – Here’s a couple of things you can try:
MessengerBlogSarah: When you clear the text out of your message field, be sure to hit return and not the Esc key on your computer (hitting Esc just restores the old message).
MessengerBlogSarah: There is also a “Clear my status message” command in the drop down menu. Click the down arrow to the right of your message and select “Clear my status message”
mike: Can I have the large emoticons back, please!
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi Mike – Wow, we found someone who likes the larger emoticons! 😉 We had so much negative feedback about the larger emoticons during the Beta that we reverted back to the small ones in this final version. At this time, we don’t have plans to offer the larger ones as an option.
tosh: Hello. Version 9.0 is great! But how can I delete my Call History?
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi tosh – It is not possible to delete your call history information. If you’re concerned about safety, the information contained within your call logs is secure and private to you.
8675309: why doesnt it update through yahoo messenger instead of going to a link to download the update
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi 8675309 (great song by the way 🙂 – When we first release a new version, we like to give it several weeks to get out there and be in use. During that time, users need to come to the website to download and install it. However later on, we will prompt users from within Yahoo! Messenger to upgrade to 9.0.
thatzmydj: I really enjoy the Audibles. When will we get new audibles added to the old ones? Keep the seasonal stuff coming too.
MessengerBlogSarah: Hi thatzmydj – Glad you like the audibles! We often release different audibles throughout the year. The best place to find out about them is the Yahoo! Messenger Blog. In fact watch for an article next week… 🙂 Yahoo! Messenger Blog
annablass96: on 9.0 chat, are we able to have conversations with more than 1 person on 1 screen sort of like a chat room but with the people you want to talk with?
YMessengerMelissa: Yep! This is called a conference. To do this, go to Actions>Invite to Conference> then select the friends you want. Its as easy as that!
loralai32: how can you tell when a friend is mobile?
YMessengerMazi: Hi loralia, Your friends’ status message will show “I’m Mobile” with a phone icon whenever they’re logged in on mobile
red: Is the call from yahoo messenger to yahoo messenger free?
YMessengerAnne: Hi “Guest”, Yes, PC-to-PC calling is free. For more information, try this link:
