Hi there,
I have a very basic problem.
I set yahoo MSG to record my chats for 2 days.
But no way to find this log file.
How to access to these records?
Thanks a lot.

Click Contacts -> then select Message Archive from the Menu that will pop-out.
I hope i get it right, i havent been able to log to Y!M for over a month so im kinda rusty 😀 . If its not in the contacts, its in Messenger menu.

I must say that I use YMS foreign language version and it is not so easy to read menu for me. 😮
Thanks to you, I found the display.
It is a big progress 🙂
In fact I would like to know where it is located on disk (what directory, what name, what format)

September 13, 2005 at 7:10 pm #129992ToeBeeMemberThe archives are stored in C:Program FilesYahoo!MessengerProfiles(your yahoo id)Archive
I think they are just text files but im not 100% on that since I dont ever use the archive function…
September 14, 2005 at 2:20 am #129994miGsMemberthe path given by Toebee is correct, but they are stored with DAT extension and you need a decoder in order for you to view it without having to sign in to messenger.
September 14, 2005 at 8:09 am #129998pc_accountMemberThanks a lot Toebee and MiGs.
I thought this was plain text file. But with this .dat extension no way to read anything.
I guess it is protected (for obvious reasons) by password.
I am using earlier version, I do not want to update as archive may be lost while upgrading .
It seems it is only possible to save messages one by one, and that is not convenient at all.
So, is there a standard way to read .dat files?

September 14, 2005 at 10:56 am #129995miGsMemberthere is a software that is designed to read archive messages even offline and without signing in. Its name is Messenger Archive Decoder, unfortunately I already deleted my copy of it:D . If i can find one i will attach here.
September 15, 2005 at 7:16 am #129999pc_accountMemberThanks a lot MiGs,
I found one at piravi, it indeed showed data first, but as i wanted to archive just asked me to buy a license.
Maybe was not the right one.
Is the archive lost after upgrading to Messenger?

September 15, 2005 at 9:12 am #129996miGsMemberPaid? hmmn mine was free. If I will be able to find it I will post it here pc_account.:D
Technically, if you will simply upgrade, your archive message should not be lost.
Archive messages are stored locally, that is, in your Hard Disk.
The location was already posted by ToeBee above. However, just to make sure you will not lose your archive messages once you upgrade, what you need to do is to have a back-up copy.
Go to C:/Program files/Yahoo!/Messenger/Profiles
Then COPY the Profile folder ( I suggest you copy the Profile folder so as to save ALL archive messages from different profiles, if any). Place your back-up copy to a location where you can easily find it (I suggest placing it in the Desktop).
Now, go ahead and upgrade.
If after upgrading your archive messages were lost, go to the path I gave above and place your back-up copy to the Messenger folder. You will be ask if you want to replace the existing Profile folder, just click YES. That should solve your problem.
Hope this helps.;)
