Keyloggers…is it or isn’t it against forum policies? Or does it depend on the purpose which the keylogger is intended for? In the past i’ve seen threads like this discouraged as an invasion of privacy…
(Seeing as that’s my board..)
The way I handle keylogger requests is this: If the user does not supply an intent, then I consider it within the forum guidelines, since keyloggers themselves are perfectly fine. However if the user supplies an intent that is a violation of privacy, then I close the thread and reference the forum policies.
The thread you link to is fine (at this point) IMO, but I’ll keep an eye on it to see where it goes.
Martin, two points…
1. Don’t forget to communicate with your Team Leader. He or she will help resolve a lot of these questions. Of course, if they aren’t online, you’re always welcome to post here.
2. There is nothing illegal about installing a keylogger on a computer that you own. You’re allowed. What you do with the information you obtain could be illegal in many jurisdictions, but that’s another matter. Where I would draw the line is when someone is asking about how to install a keylogger on a friend’s (or enemy’s) computer without their knowledge. This is very likely illegal and certainly unethical. Again, the primary question is “who owns the computer?” A corporation could choose to install keyloggers on ALL of their computers if they wanted to. In fact, many larger corporations routine log all instant messaging conversations. Scary, isn’t it? But it’s perfectly within their rights to do so.
