NeverHappens
MemberWell are they going to close because I want too…
Damn those pataphiles.May 30, 2004 at 9:52 pm #69738NeverHappens
MemberOpinions are free to say angry of it or not does not matter I want to know who wants to close down yahoo chat in canada NOT MESSENGER.
I wish they close it like they closed MSN chat not MSN MESSENGER.

MemberWho cares? I never go into Yahoo chat (or MSN chat, or AIM chat). I exchange instant messages with friends and people I know either in the real world or online. Chat rooms are full of immature teenagers who don’t know how to use the English language anyway.
If you don’t like it, don’t use it!

KeymasterI agree with Fanatic. And I don’t really understand what NeverHappens is saying. Do they want Yahoo chat room shut down?
Personally, use them if you like, or not. Why shut them down for those who DO want them?

ParticipantWhat exactly are pataphiles? Why only Canada? Why would they close them just because you want to?
You seem to have a strong opinion about this, but you fail to outline your reasons. Please clarify your position further.May 31, 2004 at 6:04 pm #69734freddy

As for English language, chat rooms pull people from around the world, not everyone speaks English, but more foreigners speak English than we speak foreign languages!
Chat Rooms have their use:
(1) You can talk to people with similar interests in real time, rather than wait all day for a response on a forum etc…
(2) Help and Assistance. Not just computing but anything. You can’t ask a book, or a website to clarify something or say it in an alternative way like you can a person.
(3) Language. Learning a language is good if you can talk to people who talk that language too. Again, a book or a tv program or a cassette cannot be asked to try and say something in a different way or to repear its self. Chat opens ability for this, and for voice too.
Everything can be abused.
If you’re one of those who thinks chat is all bad because of what happens, this stuff happens in normal Instant Messages, it happens on forums, in emails, in the street, in the park, at home, at school, at work etc…
Like everything else, children and other vulnerable people should be supervised. Like everything else, it can’t be monitored 24/7 perfectly.

KeymasterI didn’t mean to imply that I was anti-chat. My own limited experience with chat rooms hasn’t been very positive. A lot of “noise” and very little value. Might’ve just been my bad timing, or the room I was in. On the flip side, when I’ve used chat functionality associated with a company website (for support, as you mentioned) these are generally better moderated and higher value.
And Freddy, you are dead right about the abuse issue. There are opportunities for abuse in any area, online or offline. Chat is not the root of all evil.

MemberWell, as far as “pataphiles” the word “pato” means “duck” in Spanish…so maybe there are a lot of Canadians who like female ducks…or he meant “PEDOPHILES” As far as the chats…the Italian chat rooms were supposed to close and go onto some other moderated chat with actual people. Well…that was supposed to happen on the 24th..it didn’t happen. So who knows what happens in chat. There are good an bad people in chat. Actually, I have found a LOT of gossip and crap goes around so I’ve steered clear of chat b/c I got sick of small people with small minds. I do have to say every so often you do run across some really cool, smart and interesting people from other countries and it makes chatting worthwhile. 😀

MemberI never even saw the “petaphiles” lol, but as my post went, I was more or less saying that.
I wasn’t saying you was anti-chat Jeff, nor disrespecting your opinion.
You get so many people that say chat is just full of paedophiles (spelt right, UK spelling anyway 😉 ) and idiots, and this was not from you, but implied by NeverHappens.
There are many idiots, there are paedophiles. There are idiots in society as a whole, and the same goes for paedophiles, both existed before chat, and will exist even if chat is closed. A parent wouldn’t send a young child alone to a park(??), but they would be happy to let them lose on the internet alone? I am not saying it’s the parent’s fault, obviously not, but like everything, supervision is required!
Things like Yahoo! Chat, well, you get times it works, others not. I’m not saying a room should strictly stick to topic 24/7, but you do get those that just want to destroy a conversation or use a chat room for other purposes. This happens in life too, people try change a conversation, chat has the benefit of a real ignore, they just vanish. There are more idiots daily yes.
Chat specific to a site or subject is probably better, one with fewer rooms and users, its easy in a service like yahoo! for someone who would usually be in a teen room to decide to go cause a fight in the religion room. This is less likely if you’re chatting on a chat applet on a religious website.
It’s the few that can make something with big potential seem bad, like just 1 person can make a service of 100000 users look bad.

Memberphew.. you ppl are fighting here and commenting about the noise in chat rooms…
June 1, 2004 at 11:52 pm #69730detn8r
ParticipantDude, if you don’t have a legitimate reason to post, why bother? No one here is fighting over anything. It’s pointing out arguments to support their reasons behind their statements, and they all are worth reading. Not even to mention that you post doesn’t make any sense.
Future notice: if you feel you have something worthy of adding, then please the power to you .. if not, please don’t.June 2, 2004 at 12:43 am #69736neo_ny_23
MemberThanks for the info detn8r. sorry.

ParticipantDon’t be sorry, just learn from your experience. It’ll help you in the long run 😉

MemberArguments / Debates and Conversations are different 😉
BTW, Was there some reason for Canada, i.e. was there some news on this, or did you just come up with Canada because you live there/know somebody there?
