I have been wondering something for a while now. Is it ok to close topics that “we” (the people who maintain the board), feel a topic is finished. This would prevent a spammer from spamming all open topics as well as any other problems that may pop up. I’m asking this instead of assuming as well as PMing, because I think many of us may need to know this answer.
May 29, 2005 at 2:57 pm #122744TigerbladeParticipanti would assume the only time we should ever *close* a topic is if it’s become nothing more than a flame war (in which case we could also try to clean it up and keep it open), or if it clearly violates policies. (in which case we could also delete the whole thread)…
i dont know if it would be a good idea to close a thread, even if it seems finished, if it might be needed in the future. who knows what might come up, and that thread might come back into play. plus it helps out new members, who might search for threads about those things and need to add their own comment/question but wouldnt be able to if it was closed.
i guess after all that, i’m still not sure when it would be good to *close* threads…
May 29, 2005 at 3:04 pm #122737Jeff HesterKeymasterYeah I understand what you say. At wackyb’s we talked about this as well.
But what I mean is like there is a topic in the section I look over that I know 100% is over. There is no further posts required unless it’s a thank you. And I don’t see the point in a topic being open if you know 100% you answered it correctly. It only serves as bait imho that is. So I thought I’d ask before I’d get in trouble for closing a topic because I feel secure in my knowledge that the topic is done.May 29, 2005 at 5:39 pm #122741DJHyperbyteMemberAmy: please read the posting guidelines. Use fonts, text colors, text sizes and other markup sparingly. Use them to emphasize things, should you desire, but please don’t use them on your entire post.
May 29, 2005 at 6:52 pm #122738Jeff HesterKeymasterUh.. yeah I read that. This is the staff room I HAD thought we had certainly liberties here. As I don’t use colors in the other areas. I didn’t realize we were so stiff even here. Sorry
May 29, 2005 at 7:21 pm #122743shifterMemberA few of our team members have vision problems, so the colours actually make it harder for them to read your posts. It’s not that they’re trying to ruin your fun, it just helps them read your posts. Although I’m sure it could have been pointed out in a much more courteous manner. But some people are just cranky by nature, eh DJ? 😉
As for the question at hand, IMO closing a topic you feel is 100% complete is fine. Remember we can always open it again if someone feels they have more to add.

Feel free to cut loose, let your hair hang down, get jiggy wid it, or whatever floats your boat. :pAs for closing topics, I agree with Marcus– I’m cool with that. I don’t necessarily want to be hasty about closing them, but lets face it… this isn’t rocket science. If we decide to reopen a topic at any time, we can. 🙂
June 3, 2005 at 7:22 pm #122739Jeff HesterKeymasterThank you Jeff, I didn’t think things in the staff room was stiff like that. Just thought maybe DJ was threatened by the fact I’m not just a good looking woman, but one with intelligence. :p
And thanks shifter I agree it could of been said nicer, but eh.. oh well
